Homeschooling. It's something you may have heard about before, but maybe you haven't thought it would really be an option for your child. Maybe you believe it's too hard for your family. It's time-consuming. It's expensive. How do you find curricula? What about high school and diplomas? How will your child develop social skills? Most importantly, how will you get organized? This article will explain how to go about homeschooling and offer tips on making it work for your family.

1. First things first. Homeschooling is a huge undertaking and will likely require you to adjust your lifestyle. First, you will want to sit down and determine if homeschooling is right for you. Remember, you are now going to be primarily responsible for the education of your child. You don't need a teaching degree to homeschool, but you'll want to be sure that you're up to the challenge. Curriculum guides for different grades should be available from your local school board and can serve as a starting point. Talk it over with your spouse and determine how you will arrange teaching. Will one of you do it alone, or will you share responsibility? Who will teach which subjects? What time of day will be chosen as "school time"? Who will be available to help the children while they're working?

Takeaways
  • Sign up with a schoolboard or a school offering "structured" homeschooling.
  • Homeschooled kids can be well-adjusted, successful individuals.
  • Go to conferences to check out curriculum and talk to homeschooling parents for tips.
Did You Know?
I am a former homeschooled student who graduated from a "cyberschool", earned a university degree, and plan to go back for graduate school.

The cat in my picture is actually my cat, Froggie. She has lived with me for about a year and is a wonderful companion.

Way to go! Everything you said in this article is right on! I homeschooled my son from 2nd grade through high school where he then went to the community college to get tested and receive his GED (General Ed Diploma). I will never regret having taught him at home ... it was a lot of work with both the preparation and the teaching but I would do it all over again today in a heartbeat.
