The cans will no longer look like potato chip cans when you wrap each one, individually, in fabric. Use spray adhesive, or another adhesive, to hold the fabric in place. Upholstery fabric, or other thick types, work great, but you can use anything - including cut up jeans!
After you've wrapped the cans you'll bundle them into a footstool shape. Start by placing one can in the center, then following with enough cans to surround the first one. You can add as many dimensions of cans as you wish, to get the footstool size you want.
Tie the cans with a piece of string or ribbon, temporarily, right around the center. After you've added the top and bottom of the footstool you can remove the tie.
Place the tied cans on a piece of fabric, then remove them, and place them on a piece of rubber, cork or even a floor mat for a car. Draw around, and cut, one fabric shape and one rubber shape.
Using the adhesive of your choice fasten the fabric shape to the top part of the footstool. Affix the rubber shape to the bottom of the stool. You can now remove the tie from around the center of the footstool. Now you can further design the stool or leave as-is.
There are other things you can add to the footstool to make it more unique. Attach legs to the bottom, using an adhesive which will allow you to stick the legs to the rubber or cork matting. You can also purchase a large, round pillow and affix it to the top of the footstool. This will give the stool more comfort and make it look a little larger.
