For reasons unknown, the award never was considered as a statistical award until 1947. As a tribute to Jackie Robinson, who not only broke the color barrier in baseball but was a rookie that same year, the award was renamed the Jackie Robinson Award in 1987, to honor the 40th anniversary of him breaking that color barrier. (As a side note, the award was originally called the J. Louis Comiskey Memorial Award after the Chicago white Sox owner of the 1930's.) The first two years that the award achieved "recognized" status, only one overall rookie was selected regardless of the league he played in. Since 1949, one player is selected from each league.
In 1971, eligibility requirements for the award were created which defined a "rookie" as a player who does not exceed 130 at-bats, 50 innings pitched, or 45 days on any major league roster. Since 1980, the BBWAA have named three candidates on the voting ballot. First place votes are worth five points, second place votes are worth three points, and a third place vote is worth one point. The points are totaled and the winner of the award is announced after the end of the season usually in November.
But regardless of the history of the award or its criteria, I wanted to know what teams have had the most awards in their 60 year history. Without having done any research initially I had hazarded a guess as to which team produced the most rookies. Boy was I off! Naturally, I was wondering not only which team in both leagues took the honors but which team had the most overall.
