There are many ways in which Americans and Australians are very much alike. However, there are certainly also many differences between our countries . In this article I will be referring to the ways in which Americans and Australians differ in the fields of sport, entertainment and cuisine. I hope this will be of considerable value to many Americans who would just like to know more about us or who are possibly even planning to travel to or take up residency in Australia.

Our most popular sports are not baseball and grid iron football, as they are in America. Aussies love their footy (Australian rules, rugby league, rugby union and soccer) in winter - and cricket in summer. Cricket has a reputation for being something of a national religion. Ice hockey isn't really big over here either, as it seems to be in the US. Some of our most highly-esteemed heroes are our Olympic swimmers and we follow national swimming championships on TV far more avidly than Americans seem to do. On an international level we are just below America - even though our population is significantly smaller at just over 20 million.

As far as entertainment is concerned, we do share many of the same interests as Americans. Modern technological obsessions such as the internet, video games, DVDs and personal music players such as the iPod occupy many people's free time. We love movies too and the cinema is probably more popular than ever in spite of people having extensive DVD collections and good home theatre systems.

Takeaways
  • Aussies love footy, cricket and the beach!
  • Aussie guys love their utes!
  • We love to throw a "snag", steak or prawns on the "barbie"!
Did You Know?
Eating "Skippy" can be rather controversial!

I learned a lot about Australia as a child and always thought it would be a great country to visit. I had an Australian teacher in middle school and I loved watching Home and Away and Neighbours. America is also very different from the UK, which is where I am from. I've written about the cultural differences between the countries. Sophie

As an American who actually lives in Australia, I commend you on a fantastic and accurate comparison between the two countries. Regarding the 'car culture', I personally have not noticed much difference in the attitudes. Where I came from, it was mainly young guys who were car-crazy and the rest of us just used them to get from A to B... much the same as it is in Oz. Fried green tomatoes and grits are eaten primarily in the southern US; it would be almost unheard-of in the north. Good luck with the articles on education and health care - those topics tend to generate a lot of debate because every US state seems to do it differently and everyone has a different experience.

Yes, I've wondered about that - I would have expected that craft markets would have been as popular in the US as here in Australia. Thanks for your comment.

There's one thing you have to remember about your e-pal, she represents one person in a very diverse country. Here in America our likes and dislikes vary a lot from region to region. For example she said craft fairs are for the 55+ crowd. That may be true in Ohio, but in the Southeast where I live, handmade crafts are very popular with everyone from kids to seniors. What I'm trying to say is America is very diverse and the culture of various regions are based on the people who moved into that area. For example, I was born and raised in East Tennessee and now live in North Carolina. Being part Cherokee (Native American) crafts, gardening, etc. are very important to my culture.
