Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Ill.: The Champion's Choice

History

Medinah Country Club is fabled for being the breeding ground of golf champions. It is located at 6N001 Medinah Road, Medinah Illinois 60157 just west of O'Hare Airport. The club has a total of three golf courses which are referred to as Medinah Number 1, 2 and 3. The No. 3 golf course is the most popular among all three since it has hosted several major events and has provided memberships to many big names in the sport.

Architect Tom Bendelow from Scotland designed all three golf courses. The courses were named as such according to the sequence in which they opened. Medinah No. 1 opened in 1925 with coverage of 6,713 yards, a 135 slope rating and a 72.9 course rating. Medinah No. 2 opened in 1926 measuring 6,210 yards, a 122 slope rating and a 69.7 course rating. Medinah No. 3 is the biggest at 7,508 yards, a 151 slope rating and a 78.1 course rating. It opened in 1928 and was initially intended to serve as a course for women golfers.

During the 1930's, Medinah No. 3 was renovated which began its rise to popularity. Architect Roger Packard again renovated the course during the 1980's while Architect Rees Jones reworked on it in 2002. Another designer, Roger Rulewich also did some changes on Medinah No. 3. Just in 2006, deep tee boxes were added to the overall design.

Medinah No. 3 at present is the championship venue which has the longest course. The lake and several trees surrounding the area increase the course's difficulty. The course has witnessed some of the biggest events in golfing history as well as catered to celebrity golfers like Tiger Woods and Lou Graham.
