My brother was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease the middle of November and spent several days in the hospital on IV antibiotic therapy and anti-inflammation medications. We have since learned that Irritable Bowel Diseases (IBD) commonly affect members of the same family. In our family, our late father had colitis. According to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, if you have a relative who has one of these diseases, you are 10 times more likely to get this disease. I was shocked to learn that my chance of getting this disease is 30 times more likely, since it is my sibling who has the disease. Persons with IBD Diseases are also more at risk for Colon Cancer and its related syndromes and I have already experienced pre-cancerous colon polyps. This was found on my first colonoscopy and I will not be missing the follow-up colonoscopy, which is coming up the first of 2008. Persons who have pre-cancerous polyps are told to repeat the test in three years instead of the normal five-year interval.

Here is some of the information I have learned about the disease and an interview with my brother, who also has Diabetes and along with doctors will have to manage the effects of both diseases, as well as medication interactions.

My mom has Crohn's, and I am well aware of the torturous nature of it. Hers seems to come and go, but they diagnosed too many antibiotics in the beginning, and she got Clostridium Difficile, and almost died. So be very careful with the amount of antibiotics that the doctors often give. Use probiotics to make sure the balance of good bacteria is correct.

(btw, AC has frequently changed my titles) Great job explaining the illness, Elena. Glad to see it published! I can relate to what your brother is going through now; I do think I was fortunate that my Crohn's was diagnosed early (only because of amoebic dysentery and a colonoscopy - my previous docs thought it was Irritable Bowel Syndrome), but I know it's only a matter of time until I need Remicade or something like it, and am hospitalized for this. My thoughts and prayers are with your brother, and thanks for sharing my article about my own experiences with Crohn's with him.

Thank you for the thorough examination and your brother's willingness to talk about the issue. I pray the best for him. Technically, now IBD's are covered under the American's with Disabilities Act and a patient CANNOT be denied access to a restroom.....I just about went across the counter on a guy who tried to deny my friend when we were in Florida.....Ultimately, they were very accommodating...So, until you get your card...if you have to mention the disability issue, do so....It is no joke getting a Crohn's patient to the restroom...Best to your brother.
