I noticed when Peetie the Parakeet wanted something from one of us three humans in the family he would begin to imitate one of us, talk to himself in a mirror or skawk so loud you had to pay attention. Invariably the skawking would begin when I came home from school and sat down to do my homework. Peetie helped me learn how to connect the dots to get from Point A to Point B, to get my homework done and to get my needs met, in his effortless style.
It was many years and miles after I began realizing and reflecting on some of my own learing curves and who or what had actually facilitated me or hindered the learning process for me.
I realized how that parakeet helped me and others so much that I consulted with Demi Hungerford-the Bird Mart Chair for the North County Aviculturists of San Diego regarding my questions about the parakeet's fearlessness, friendliness, constant expression of self and inclusion of the family memebers.
Peetie would travel from Point A to Point B inside the Fort Wayne, Ind. home fearlessly.
Peetie had no qualms about acceptance, he just seemed to know where he wanted to go and took the path of least resistance to get there.
I now wonder if I could use that parakeet's showboat style and courage to help other kids learn a thing or two.
