Yemen: See the World Without Spending a Lot of Money
I love to travel and see the world, but I don't have a fortune to spend doing it. Therefore, I am writing a series of "Hobo's Guides" to share what I've learned about seeing this vast world we live in, experiencing the true cultures found there, and doing it with very little money. If you want to tr
avel and stay in a 5-star hotel with all the amenities, my guides are not for you! My guides are about seeing the world without going through the tourist traps, and how to do it while spending as little money as possible.
Type "travel" or vacation" into a search engine, and the first few pages of search results (at least!) will be filled with ads from tropical islands or European getaways. Yemen rarely tops the list, but for those who wish to sidestep areas inundated with tourists and delve straight into untouched culture that has remained virtually the same for hundreds of years, Yemen is a great choice.
Located on the Arabian Peninsula below Saudi Arabia, few people know anything about this ancient society. It seems that the only time Yemen is mentioned in the media is when the newscasters are talking about al-qaeda or the "war on terrorism". As a result, Yemen is often viewed as a hostile place full of evil terrorists, but the reality is actually quite the opposite.
One of the best things about traveling to Yemen is that you don't need a lot of cash. The most expensive part is the plane ticket to get there. After arriving, however, two people can eat, live, and travel without spending more than $400 for an entire month!
