I know I am not the only writer who is sick to death of getting excited about a listing for a writing gig, only to click on it and see that it's a "flagged" Craigslist ad.

First of all, if any AC CP's are guilty of flagging any CL ads for writing, editing or proofreading gigs, you have a lot of nerve. If any non-CP's who are just visiting this site, are guilty of flagging, equal shame to you as well. And to anyone else who thinks they are Lord over others and decides to flag an ad, what gives you the right?

Who are YOU to decide an ad should be flagged? On a writer's site, I bought up this topic and someone actually posted that she flags ads calling for people to re-write college papers. How dare she? This is a legitimate writing gig. There ARE people who will take on these low-paying gigs.

Why do writing gig ads get flagged in the first place? What are they really -- ads recruiting people to pose for a porn site? How "inappropriate" or "abusive" can an ad for editorial help be? The listings that I click on seem extremely legitimate.

And if it turns out that they pay only pennies, or don't pay at all, or want me to do all sorts of other things unrelated to editorial, then I can simply terminate contact with them. What could be easier in life?

Nobody has the right to think for me. Nobody has the right to think they are the final word and final judge and take it upon their high-and-almighty selves to flag an ad. Like I said, you have a lot of nerve taking away opportunities for other people. Who made YOU the decision maker? If you think an ad is questionable, then skip it and get on with your self-righteous life. It's none of your business if I come across that questionable ad and waste time with responding to it.

I am also acutely aware that some ads get flagged after a writer responds to it; the writer wants to knock off the competition. To be honest, I can completely understand the logic behind this, even though I would never pull this stunt myself.

"Spread the word: CL is run by morons." This statement is rather ironic in light of the fact that Craigslist is, in fact, run by its users. In my opinion, Craigslist is the world's biggest social experiment. You are the small angry gerbil who can't find their way out. Complaining about a free service? Really?

The reason for flagging is because of the scammers out their. Also, the people selling items they aren't allowed to sell, such as Adobe software that is loaded on the computer, and they advertise multiple programs that are worth $700- $3000 as coming with the computer they are selling for $1500. This is not legal. Period. So get off the free speech kick, this is not about that. i believe in free speech, but that doesn't allow for illegal transactions. Carigslist doesn't have the staff to go through hundreds of thousands if not millions of adds that are posted each week around the world.

What a bizarre system, to say the least. I saw this on an FAQ about flagging: Anybody can flag anything for any reason. If they are having a Bad Hair Day they can flag your ad. If they don't like your spelling they can flag your ad. If they think you are the 9th incarnation of the Devil they can flag your ad. If they think they are the 9th incarnation of the Devil they can flag your ad. OK?. It takes a number of flags to remove an ad so one person having a monthly moment can't kill an ad. You have to annoy (or at least inspire) a number of people. That means you are quite possibly doing Something Bad. (available at: http://www.eskimo.com/%7Enewowl/Flagged_FAQ.htm#001) I was told that my ad was flagged because I had "OBO" in the the body, and because some people on craigslist for some reason think "OBO" is a scam of some kind. Pick up any classified section of any newspaper in the country and see if you see an "obo." Others said it was because my ad wasn't specific enough.

Aye-men to all! Having just experienced the strong negative power of Craigslist myself, which has left me shaking and feeling like I am going to barf, I wonder why in the world I would ever subject myself to that site again. So sad- it used to be so cool. Ah well, I guess good things don't always last. CL seems to be going to hell in a handbasket and fast...

Thanks, you hit the nail on the head. Somebody needed to say this and you said it very well. I'm a sax player and I get my ads flagged down by idiots who don't like sax players, or don't like jazz, or other sax players who also have ads up, or people who just think they have the right to decide what should be on CL and what shouldn't. The system is ostensibly to eliminate spammers. Well I'm seeing tons of spam and legit ads disappearing right and left because some idiots don't believe in freedom of speech and believe they know what's best for everyone else. Craigslist is a perfect example of howstupid people will be intolerant of all but the lowest common denominator in this supposed democracy. Fuck craigslist!

Yes! "Stupid as a box of rocks" rings true. I post ads in Craiglist once in a blue moon and every time I've been flagged down on completely legit ads. It's frustrating, perplexing, and who the hell has the time to surf Craiglist all day except the same psycho control freaks who flag to their hearts content. Craigslist sucks.
