Every year around Easter, the popularity of the house rabbit soars. We see these adorable, furry critters depicted everywhere we go, from drug stores to restaurants. Children beg their parents to get them a bunny, and often times against their better judgment, parents give in to their children's wishes. Unfortunately, the novelty of the new pet seems to wear off quickly after Easter passes, and pet shelters often experience a surge in the number of rabbits brought in that time of year. As many experts agree, the best thing to do is to avoid falling into this trap altogether. However, as a parent you may find it difficult to not give into your son or daughter's persistent request, especially as the holiday gets closer. So if you find yourself in this situation, here is some advice that may help in creating a more positive outcome.

First, speak with your son or daughter about what it will mean to have a pet. Make sure that they understand both the benefits and the responsibility that comes with having a pet of their own. Next, do some research in order to increase your knowledge of rabbits. Having a rabbit is like owning any other major pet. It is important to develop a true understanding of what it will be like to have a pet rabbit. This will help decrease the likelihood that you will later regret your decision. Find out what the typical lifespan of rabbits are, look into the different breeds and general demeanors of each breed - for example. Find out what type of veterinary care is typically required, and what is involved in the overall daily care of a rabbit. Don't underestimate the time involved in caring for a rabbit. You may find that much of the literature indicates that rabbits are not typically a good pet for children. They startle easily and may bite when they feel threatened.
