Stringing beaded jewelry necklaces is one of the easiest and most rewarding projects for both beginner and advanced jewelry artists. Beaded necklaces can be as basic as a single string of beads, or as complex as a netted choker with wire-wrapped beads and dangles. Whatever type of beaded necklace you make, it all starts with the thread that holds the beads together. Below are the five most popular types of threads and cords used in beaded jewelry necklaces. Beaded Necklace Thread - Nylon Bead Thread
Nylon beading thread comes in various colors and thicknesses. It is used for normal bead stringing projects and bead weaving and bead loom projects. It is both stronger and skinnier than regular sewing thread and works for stringing seed beads especially.
Beaded Necklace Thread - Monofilaments or Fishing Line
These narrow threads are made completely from plastics. They are not very strong but useful for seed bead projects and beaded necklaces that require transparent beading thread, such as illusion necklaces.
Beaded Necklace Thread - Natural Fiber Cords
Natural fiber threads and cords are made from natural materials such as hemp, cotton, silk, and leather. These threads are more often called cords since they are much thicker than the monofilament and nylon beading thread types. Beaded necklaces made with these types of thread get some of their structure from the thread itself. Hemp and silk cord especially are knotted and tied in intricate ways to accent the beads.
Beaded Necklace Thread - Wire
Wire is another beaded necklace thread that creates structure. It is very popular to wrap large beads and semi-precious gemstones in wire that is bent in intricate shapes and patterns. These pieces are attached together to form a necklace, or strung on other necklace threads. There is also a type of wire called memory wire, which retains a circular shape perfect for either beaded bracelets or short beaded necklaces.
