There are a number of men, women, and children in this country with an addiction to pornographic materials. I personally believe that the internet has in some ways caused the spead of this disease, along with lack of education. I am not referring to men who subscribe to a monthly issue of Playboy or Penthouse. I am referring to people who can not function throughout the day without seeing pornography. Recently while talking to a group of women I was surprised at the number of them who mentioned pornography was a problem in their marriage. One would think money was the number one problem, and while many did say they fight over money several mentioned pornography. It was as if a dam opened up and it was a safe topic after realizing that they were not the only ones going through this. The sad fact is most people think that sex is a taboo subject and pornography is something shameful to talk about.

Carolyn was the more distraught of the group. "My husband goes to work and directly to the computer in the office when he comes home from work. He prefers the computer than to doing things with his family." Carolyn started checking the online history and discovered that her husband was spending all his free time with online porn sites. He even asked for a wireless laptop computer for Christmas and is preparing to buy his own if he does not get one. She attempted to talk to him about his problem but he became defensive. Carolyn mentioned that she has noticed her teenage son has also looked up sites that she felt were pornographic and he was embarassed and mad that she was "checking up" on him. Carolyns husband always spent time playing outside with the children but now the family does not spend any time together. "If we have to go to a family function my husband finds a reason to leave early." Carolyn is depressed and confused.

Takeaways
  • Online filters are not 100% effective all the time.

An ought-to-be-required read for all parents of teenage boys! Thanks. David
