Air travel now requires understanding more rules than we are used to. These new rules are being enforced for our own protection. This is because since the attacks on September 11, 2001 our air security has become stricter for everyone traveling via airplane. If you are going to be traveling by air any time in the future you will need to know and understand these rules for your convenience and to save time. Security measures may be different at various airports, but the basic rules should remain the same. Be prepared for your flight so you can save yourself the time and stress of possibly breaking an airport rule.
What You Need To Get Through The Security Checkpoint -
Your Paper Ticket and/or Your Printed Confirmation
Your Boarding Pass or The Airlines Itinerary
A Valid Photo Identification, Such as Your Driver's License
 Your Passport
Make sure you have these items ready for security to check as soon as you get to the airport. Since security has been stepped up you will most likely experience longer waiting times. Prepare to wait and bring something with you to keep you occupied. You should check your baggage about two hours before your flight and be ready at the gate about one hour before your flight. However this may vary from airport to airport.
There is always an updated list of non-permitted items that you will need to keep up to date on, especially if you travel often.
Non-Permitted Items for Carry On -
 Box Cutters
 Ice Picks
 Axes
 Knives
 Any Type of Razor Blade
 Sabers
No Scissors Longer Than Four Inches
 Swords
 Baseball Bats
 Bows and Arrows
 Cricket Bats
 Golf Clubs
 Spear Guns
 Hockey Sticks
 Pool Cues
 Ammunition
 Any Type of Gun
 Flares
 Gun Powder
