The Barnegat Diner definitely went through it's growing pains when it first opened three years ago. The very first time my husband and I visited, I received a piece of bread with a few spots of mold on it. Quite repulsed, I notified the waitress who immediately took the bread away. She sent the owner over who apologized. I was not offered a free dessert or a discount on my meal. Not that it is required during circumstances such as these, but it definitely is good business. Needless to say, I was quite put off and it was a fairly long time before we returned. The Barnegat Diner is located at 849 West Bay Avenue in Barnegat, New Jersey.

After more than a year went by and the memory of my extra special bread was not quite so fresh, we returned. I believe it was my husband who convinced me we should give it another try. I much prefer the Stafford Diner in Manahawkin, but we really like to support local businesses in our town and the Barneget Diner is only five minutes from our house.

The second time we ate at the Barnegat Diner, we enjoyed a lovely meal with great service. The food was hot, tasty and served to us very quickly. My husband is a fan of the diner style Reuben sandwiches while I usually order the turkey club. Each of our sandwiches were thick, filling and quite delicious. Our waitress was pleasant and attentive. With faith renewed in our little local diner, I chalked up the first experience to the newness and perhaps inexperience of the kitchen staff. There is an old saying that you should never visit a new restaurant until it is open for at least six months. This gives the restaurant time to work out the kinks, figure out what works and what doesn't and to replace new employees if necessary.

Great article. I will have to go there sometime. I live in New York, so I am right next door :-)

You're an understanding customer. That's for sure.

Sounds like they got their act together. Maybe your initial experience was a contributing factor, maybe it was a wake up call. Anyway, thanks for a GREAT review!

I don't understand why restaurants don't go the extra mile when something like this happens. I would have offered you a free meal. Nice review. :-)

K.Ray - my brother had a worm in his salad...yikes! I'm glad you gave this restaurant another try - sounds good.

Oh wow... I would have been really disgusted too. I would have had a hard time going back, but accidents happen. I just wonder how they could be so careless? I've wondered that when I end up with the stem of a tomato in my salad, and my sister had a worm, yes, a worm, on her plate under her sandwich! She was only offered the sandwich for free. After we were both sick because of the incident I think the entire meal should have been free. I wrote an article on that experience. I have to wonder, if these people were serving themselves, would they have served that very same food? I think not! You were brave to give them a second chance. Excellent and honest review!

I don't know if I could have ever returned after getting moldy bread, but it's good that they got their act together! This sounds like a great place, now. Great review.

I would have been put off after receiving mouldy bread too! I'm surprised you went back. But at least the food was better on other occasions. Sophie

Sounds like a great place to take the family (now that they have the bread issue resolved). A wonderful review! :)

It's nice to have special places like this close to home.
