Now originally I was going to name this the Top 10 Greatest R&B groups of the 1980's, but that became increasingly difficult when I realized that most of the great groups (in R&B anyway) came out during the 1970's and 1990's! They were more pop, rock and fly by night one hit wonders in the 80's than anything else! So I had to expand my list to just great R&B artist in general of the 80's! The list still was time consuming (I've been working on this literally all day since 11am this morning), tedious, brain teasing, and energy draining! But I've finally complied a list worthy of my peeps approval and kudos (or will die trying, lol). So without further delay or rambling from me , I present to you:

The Top 10 Greatest R&B Artist Of The 1980's! ENJOY :)

10. Troop - Biggest record of the era: Spread my wings & All I do is think of you (these guys had serious talent and amazing harmony, very underrated group)

9. Atlantic Starr - Biggest record of the era: Secret Lovers & Always (hit making machine of the 80's as far as groups go, who have great classic ballads that have stood the test of time)

8. Freddie Jackson - Biggest record of the era: Rock me tonight & You are my lady (incredible vocalist with a smooth voice and sophisticated style)

7. Guy - Biggest record of the era: Groove me & I Like (this New Jack trio invented a whole new style and flava of music and dance that was influentil to aaa eartist of that time era)

6. Keith Sweat - Biggest record of the era: I Wanna & Make it last forever (Ketih was one of the most steady and consistent hit making artist for a good 7 to 8 years straight, since his debut! A huge rarity for artist who came out back in the 80's!)

5. Tony, Toni, Tone - Biggest record of the era: Little Walter & Feels Good (this is one of the most talented, funky and creative groups out of the 80's, very underrated!)

4. Anita Baker - Biggest record of the era: Giving you the best that I've got & You bring me joy (is there really any need to say anything here, this is the ultimate definition of class, elegance and grace personified through song, the one & only Ms. Anita Baker!)

Takeaways
  • A trip down memory lane to celebrate some of the most gifted singers of the 80's!

I absolutely love this list. I totally agree. I was born in 1983 so I vaguely remember exactly when the song came out but I remember my brothers owning most of these on cassette. Your top three, especially, would have been tied for first place.

Thanks a lot Queen. True indeed they just don't make music like the good old days anymore! But then again, I bet every generation is partial to their own decade they grew up in, lol! Gotta love the 80's though :) Peace, Wisdom Supreme

I love this article. I had the biggest crush on Al B. Sure and New Edition(Ronnie and Ralph, my favorite members) I miss those days and the good R&B music.
