Sharks are the world's most perfect predator. They have changed little at all in the last several million years. There is little to improve upon. Sharks are one of my favorite creatures but naturally, I am a little afraid of them. I might swim up to one, but certainly not a man-eater. After moving to Hawaii two years ago, I learned a few things about sharks I did not know before and also how to avoid them.

To begin, you should know that it is extremely unlikely that you will ever be attacked by a shark. In fact, you probably will never see a shark outside of an aquarium, even if you swim in the ocean every day of your life. Of the millions upon millions of people who swim in the ocean each and every day, only a handful of them will be attacked by a shark each year. Honestly, when was the last time you ever heard of anyone being attacked by a shark? Years ago?

Those who are attacked almost always receive only minor injuries and almost none at all are killed. Shark attacks are truly freak accidents. You are far more likely to be hit by a bolt of lightning or be killed by your toilet. Still, if you are afraid, there are several tips and tricks for keeping sharks at bay.

Stay out of murky water. Sharks are total cowards. They are terrified of most everything, big as they are, so they like to plan sneak attacks. Murky water, such as in areas where freshwater streams and rivers meet with the ocean, provide a safe place for sharks to feed. Don't swim in cloudy water. Stick to clean and clear areas if possible.

Do not swim at night. Sharks usually sleep during the day and are most active at night. Just like with murky water, sharks like to attack things that can't see them coming. Even if the water is well lit in the area where you are, sharks may still be attracted because prey fish will be attracted to your lights. Don't swim at night at all, even in lit areas.

Swim toward a shark to repel it, not away from it.

Takeaways
  • Sharks are scaredy-cats. Swim toward them to scare them away.
  • Sharks like to attack in secret so swim during the day in clear water.
  • You are more likely to be killed by your toilet than attacked by a shark.
