ProCon.org: New Website Presents Both Sides of Illegal Immigration
Unauthorized immigration is a hot-button issue that is polarizing communities across the nation. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, there are currently 11.6 million illegal immigrants living in America. How to properly
address the issue of unauthorized immigration has been the subject of heated debates across the country. In response to the increased attention placed on this complex issue, Procon.org launched its newest website, http://www.immigrationprocon.org.
ProCon.org is a nonpartisan non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public about complicated social issues such as illegal immigration. ProCon.org was formed in 2004 and has addressed a variety of issues including the Iraq War, medical marijuana, origins of sexual orientation, the ACLU, and electronic voting machines among others. ProCon.org's seeks to present complicated, divisive issues in a balanced and educated way by utilizing a pro vs. con format.
ProCon.org's website addresses questions relevant to illegal immigration. Every question has corresponding statements from organizations and individuals that express a clear pro or con opinion on the subject. Every quoted source has a bibliography that readers can access to gain more information about the statement and related issue. Topics addressed by these questions range from granting amnesty, militarizing America's borders, Minutemen militias, driver's licenses and IDs, and the national economy.
According to Kamy Akhavan, the new website arose out of the requests of ProCon.org's readers, who repeatedly asked the organization to address issues around illegal immigration. Akhavan emphasized that ProCon.org seeks to present competing perspectives in a non-partisan format. "Americans needed an unbiased and simple way to understand this topic and make informed choices on the matter", said Akhavan.
