Known as an advocate for anorexia and shamelessly accusing the overweight of being lazy and gluttonous, Dr. Irwin Maxwell Stillman was a pioneer of the low carbohydrate diet.  As a diet revolutionary of the 1960’s, Dr. Stillman published, “ The Doctor’s Quick Weight Loss Diet”; the first account of a published low carb, low fat diet. No longer in print, this book is considered not only a collector’s item but a bible of sorts for the low carb diet frenzy of today. Better known today as the Stillman Diet, Dr. Stillman’s low carb, low fat diet has been known to be modified into what is now the basis for the Atkin’s Diet and The Zone diet. To understand the origin and success of the diet, physicians in nutrition and weight loss areanas have been examining metabolism and the application of protein as far back as the 1960's when his first book was published.

In his writings, Dr. Stillman urges anyone who is overweight to consume less food. However, he goes one step further by suggesting the elimination of all carbohydrates. Unlike the Atkins Diet, the Stillman Diet prohibits the use of all sauces, fats and oils.  However, similar to the Atkins Diet, the Stillman Diet recommends a rigid consumption, in unlimited quantities of lean meat, fish, poultry, low fat cheese and eggs. Because of the significant increase in protein consumption, the Stillman Diet can produce hardship upon the kidneys. For this reason, Dr. Stillman recommends no less than 80 ounces of water per day in addition to drinking tea, coffee and non caloric drinks.

Takeaways
  • Pre-dating The Atkins Diet, The Stillman Diet offers the same results
  • The Stillman Diet is known to provide proven and fast weight loss results
  • The Stillman Diet allows for consumption of meat, eggs and cheese.
Did You Know?
Dr. Stillman passed away of cardiac failure.

...continued for Vivian. With the coffee and tea only use artificial sugar substitutes - no milk, cream, or sugar! Seasonings you can use are salt, pepper, garlic, herbs, spices, cocktail sauce, Tabasco, horseradish and ketchup. Also a multivitamin once a day is recommended.

Vivian- As I pull out my pocket version of Dr. Stillman's diet (handed down to me from my mom), it's like a family bible to us, I'll briefly touch on the Quick Weight Loss Method (lose 5% - 10% of your weight in the first week). On this diet, you eat all you want of the following foods to satisy hunger and eat 6 smaller meals than 3 large meals. Do not eat anything other than the following foods: Lean meat (beef, lamb, veal - broiled, boiled, baked, or smoked); Chicken and turkey (all skin removed) - broiled, boiled, or roasted; Lean fish and seafood (flounder, haddock, cod, perch, shrimp, scallops, lobster, oysers, clams, crab - broiled, boiled, or baked); Eggs - hard cooked, soft or medium cooked and poached; Cottage cheese, farmer's cheese, pot cheese and any cheese made with skim milk. That ALL the food you have to choose from - not butters, oils, etc! Besides a minimum of 8 10-oz glasses of water a day, you can also drink club soda, and non-caloric carbonated drinks, coffee and te

Could somebody share the diet with me, I remember you could alternate food every 3 days for all vegetables, or fruits or even ice cream. Let me know if what I rmember is correct, I did the diet in the 70's for 2 weeks as a jump start, and lost 10 lbs then switched to a low calorie diet, always seemed to get a bad cold when I started the Atkins diet. Let me know if you have any ideas for me, I want to lose about 20-25 lbs.

Anon, Karen Carpenter also took huge quantaties of laxatives and thyroid medication to speed up her metabolism. I think that is where the cardiac arrest came in place for her.

I have done this diet two times in the past. Both times it worked very well, but I went back to gourmet food. [It sucks being a fantastic cook] I started it again just 5 days ago and in my first week I lost 8 pounds, water I am sure. Good luck to everyone else out there who struggles with weight. This one does work.

I did this diet back in the 70's. He had a version called the quick teenage diet. The only difference between it and the other was you drank a glass of skim milk. I didn't drink a enough water. The water can't be stressed enough I started bleeding through my urine. This is hard on the kidneys the water is a must but I lost from 165 pounds down to 128 that time. I have used it time and time before and it is the only thing I have been able to lose with. Now I need to loose a considerable amount of weight and have decided to try this diet again.

I have been doing this diet for 5 days and have lost approximately 7lbs. I am finding it easy to do and find I have a ton of energy (duh ...burning fat) and also am very clear minded. I feel very focoused and encourged since I was really struggling on atkins totally sticking to it and NOT LOSING. Its nice to see the scale move b/c i thought there was something wrong with me. I think its super easy honestly!! There isnt much food to choose from but you can eat different things every day. I am finding that smaller meals 6 times a day are working well. The hunger I feel is real and it is satisfied with very little. I AM VERY EXCITED!! YAY!!
