Ok, so, just how do we vote for one another here? Are there any moral standards we go by? Is it tactical? Does the golden rule apply for you perhaps? Comments would be much appreciated.

I'm new here and the thought of it all just intrigued me. I know that I have developed rules for how I vote & I wondered. What about you? Coming from a long sales background, I know that this kind of thing, how we treat one another, with or without official rules, can be an interesting cacophony of desires and justifications.

I'll share my my rules with you:

If a piece is worthy of 4 to 5 stars, it's no problem. I vote. I'm iffy at 3 stars. I never vote a 2. I reserve a 1 star for the most vile filth as I'm not likely to vote so bitterly, in my view. I do not vote on most pieces I encounter. I feel that something needs to grab me.

I don't know if anyone feels the way I do. Perhaps, you use your vote to knock down the competition. I tend to find this kind of activity to be the act of the weak and the desperate. To me, such a vote is a false accusation. You might be the jolly voter that just loves to dish out the 5's. That one's not me either. Still, are you even compelled to vote? Does it matter to you... as a CP... as a reader?

Anyway, leave your comments. Ask questions. Your thoughts in this open discussion would be wonderful!

sorry - I meant "continuation." Reading (or in my case, proofreading) is fundamental... LOL. Great topic, by the way! And welcome to AC. I have a strong feeling that you will quickly become a very popular writer for this site.

the movie critics gave them low ratings (this is a contuation from my previous entry). I always keep an open mind and if I don't like something, I simply move on.

Like many others who have already commented, I rarely give a low rating because I disagree with another writer's views or because their writing style may not be as polished as that of a more seasoned or skilled writer. I have found value in most of the pieces I have read on this site - whether it was in the humor, creativity, informative nature, etc. I don't understand the concept of rating low to knock down (or out) the competition on AC. What would we be competing for anyhow? Status? Because it definitely isn't money! We know that page views - not people's views - is what pays on AC. This means that even when a person rates an article low, or continually clicks onto the same article to write nasty comments and/or challenge the views of the author or other people who comment, they are actually doing the writer a favor by increasing their traffic! Anyway, I never pass on an opportunity to read an article just because it has low ratings, just as I don't avoid seeing movies just because

Thanks for the responses. The ideas are very interesting.

I agree with Justice and Alyce (don't faint Alyce. This is at least the second time we have agreed) Autumn, and you! Down rating is a game for the sissy. Personally I have never voted anything other than a 5 or a 1 on any article I have ever rated. The 1 is reserved for vile hate speech. 5 is cause I like ya, or because I like your point or position. I almost never vote a 1 except in the most dire of circumstances. BTW, I do not downrate those from the other side of the political fence. And I have often rated a 5 on articles by the political opposition, especially Sexton, Musall and Deez, cause even if those cats are loony Lefties, they're good folks. Hell, I even like ALYCE, and she hates my butt.

A comment on JLN's comment: The stars say "to rate content" not "rate writing style". The assumption that someone is "cowardly" and the reasons you stated are rather absurd. I have seen some great articles rated poorly (and wondered why) and I doubt that any AC CP decides to read or not read an article based on someone else's rating. One CP wrote an article about lack of comments and low ratings and I suggested that the rating was the comment. He totally misunderstood my comment and blasted me with ugly words which is his style.

oops I appreciate the time and effort invested.

Hi Isdaman, Welcome to AC! Unfortunately, I'd have to agree completely with Justice. People will often downrate you if they don't agree with you. However, for the most part---voting around here is pretty civil. I can only tell you what I do. First, I admit that I don't read many articles here. I certainly don't mean to be inconsiderate in ANY way. It's just that when I cam aboard--it never crossed my mind that I would be writing for other CP's. I write for the internet. And, I would frankly rather spend my extra time here interacting with others in the forum... But, OK..voting. I don't generally downrate--even for poorly written articles. I think I did it maybe once for an article that was not only poorly written--but racist and offensive. I also don't vote if the current "score" looks about right. I DO make a point of voting up articles that are extremely well written with extensive research. Even when they deal with topics that I have no real interest in--I DO appreciate the ti

There were only one or two articles that were so badly written~full of typos, no paragraphs, sentences that made little sense that I did rate a 1. Usually, I just ignore them. I rate 1 or 2 line sentences and jokes as a 1; articles are supposed to be 400 words minimum. I have also rated articles 1 when they are full of foul language and misinformation.

After a while and some site changes, I found that the "Thank you" message was gone, and I too, could become a down (or up) rater! Who has the time for such nonsense? I seldom rate AC articles, because AC system keeps sending me to IE error pages and it is not worth the trouble of rating, after it took me 6 tries to read and comment on the article. When I rate, I rate 5 stars due to excellent writing or subject. If I disagree with the author, I do not rate at all~every one entitled to their opinion, even if their opinion is hateful.

I often see "Rate this article" stars on the Internet, which I will do if I think it is a great article. That is what I did at AC; the message is "Thank You For Voting". I did not know it was a vote. I read a lot of forum topics, and being new, I thought "the Downrater" was an AC editor, that was using the stars to say "this article sucks". Once I rate an article, I get a "Thank you" message and could not re=rate it at a later date, so I did not understand, once I realized "the Downrater" was different people who purposely (accused) would sit and click 1 star to bring the rating down.

First, I gave you a 5 because I thought the premise and the rhetorical question posed was worthy of a 5. Second, I tend not to vote if I think the article is less than a 3. Third, I notice at AC, just like many other online forums, SOME PEOPLE VOTE DOWN POSTS AND ARTICLES NOT BECAUSE OF BAD WRITING STYLE, BUT BECAUSE THEY DON'T LIKE THE TOPIC OR OPINIONS OF THE WRITER (or maybe not even like the writer personally). It's a cowardly tactic used by people who think that if they knock an article's rating down low enough, everyone else will think it sucks, too, and not even bother to read it! I see it alot on articles about religion, politics, and social issues. I'll read such an article, and it may be very well-written and researched, but only has a rating of 1.8! Just a little something to think about!
