Our Grandmothers had the same battle with pest in their house that we do today. The difference? Grandma had to find a way to deter these pests without running to the store for a can of chemicals. Here are a few natural repellents used in years gone by. A natural way to repel fleas.
Most dogs have a favorite place or two to sleep. Some have a rug, or a certain place on the carpet. Others have a pet bed where they lay. If fleas bother you from your dog, try the following natural treatment for pests:
½ cup pennyroyal
3 Tablespoons dried Thyme
3 Tablespoons wormwood
3 Tablespoons rosemary
In a bowl, mix these ingredients together well.
Open the seam to your pet bedding a little. Put the above mixture inside. Sew the seam back together. This mixture should repel fleas from taking up residence in your pet's bed.
To deter fleas from carpets and rugs naturally, sprinkle pennyroyal or fennel over them. Let this set for a few days if possible. Vacuum well and make sure to get rid of the vacuum bag after cleaning up the fleas.
A natural way to repel moths in the house.
You see these little moths winging around your closets and curtains. They lay eggs and are destructive. Try this natural moth repellent to get them under control:
½ cup whole cloves
½ cup whole black peppercorns
4 sticks cinnamon bark, broken into pieces
Small squares of cheesecloth or muslin
Mix the peppercorns, cloves and pieces of cinnamon together. Place a little of the mixture on the center of the squares. You can either tie or sew the squares.
You can hang these little natural mixture filled squares in the closet or strew them around in drawers. Another place that might draw moths is the clothes hampers, try putting a couple of squares there to repel as well.
A natural way to repel and destroy flour bugs/worms.
These little bugs are a nuisance. This quick and easy natural way of dealing with them works.
Wrap your new foods in plastic freezer bags or freezer wrap and toss them in the freezer. Staying in the freezer for at least 24 hours is a natural way to destroy the eggs. If you have a varmint proof place outside in the freezing weather it would work as well as the freezer.
