In the United States, it is no longer surprising to hear statistics that reveal the divorce rate is well over 50 percent. In many divorces, the realization that mental health complications may have contributing to the discord, leaves many married couples hoping for resolution with proper treatment. If you are in a relationship that is headed for divorce, and mental health complications may be at the core of your relationship dysfunction, it is important to seek psychiatric help before allowing your marriage to end completely.

For some married couples, however, the onset of separation and divorce may be the trigger which brings about a mental health complication. For these individuals, no prior mental health complication was present until such time as the marriage dissolved at which point the psychiatric complications began. In fact, in many couples, the development of depression is quite common in both men and women during separation and divorce but tends to affect men more frequently.

In terms of anxiety, there is great likelihood of both men and women developing an anxiety disorder that is often not easily resolved, even after moving into a new relationship or marriage. Beyond anxiety, many divorced couples also develop substance abuse complication, especially when there is a familial history of substance abuse as a coping mechanism.

Additionally, it is also important to recognize your spouse may also experience these same types of mental health complications. From depression to anxiety, it is often the untreated mental health complications of the estranged couple that led to emotional and psychological complications in the children and extended family.

While it is unfortunate, many couples experience a significant increase in the violence following the decision to separate or divorce. In addition, there is an increase in the number of restraining orders also required.
