College is a great experience that many people remember as the best years of their lives. However, the newfound freedom for young people can lead to bad choices. One thing that tends to be ignored is healthy eating. Because many entering college students have never lived on their own before, they often gain the "Freshman 15" because of the poor eating habits that they develop. The best way to avoid putting on these extra pounds is to set up a structured meal plan, avoid excessively eating fast food, and to maintain a good workout regiment.

Usually colleges offer some sort of meal plan that gives students the option to have healthy food. However, it is up to you to choose to eat smart. Instead of grabbing the giant cheeseburger and the chili cheese fries every day, occasionally pick up a salad or healthy sandwich. Mom and dad are no longer there forcing you to eat all of your greens, so you must opt to do it to ensure that you do not gain an excessive amount of weight.

It's a fact that if you're a college student, most likely you won't have a lot of extra spending money. Because of this you may often be tempted to eat fast food because of the cheap price. I mean, a double cheeseburger for only a dollar, great! Even though it is cheap and tastes great, it is not a very healthy choice and if you consistently make eating fast food a pattern you will see yourself quickly packing on of the pounds. Easting fast food every now and then is fine, but you must limit yourself, even if it means spending and extra dollar or two to buy something healthier.

Finally, the best way to ensure that you don't gain an excessive amount of weight when you go to college if by working out or participating in a sport. Most colleges offer some sort of gym where students can go to work out, so take advantage of it a few times a week. This will help keep the extra pounds that all those cheeseburgers put on you. If you can, try to join some sort of college sponsored sport. Not only will it be more fun than working out, but you will get all the positive benefits as well.
