Affirmative action can be easily defined as “an active effort to improve the employment or educational opportunities of members of minority groups and women”. During the last decade, affirmative action has been one of the most intensely debated issues in national politics. Some define affirmative action as the ability to strive for equality and inclusiveness. Others might see it as a quota-based system for different minority groups. Is affirmative action fair? Are minority groups on equal footing? Is gaining employment for minorities difficult? Is education easily obtained for the minority groups of people? These are some of the important questions surrounding this issue. To better understand the controversy and debate surrounding affirmative action, it is necessary to see how affirmative action came about, its initial intent and what it has become in its 30 year history.

Affirmative action programs have spanned seven different presidential admistrations – four Republican and three Democratic. In 1961, in Executive Order No. 10925, John F. Kennedy introduced the phrase “affirmative action” and established the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EOEC). JFK’s Executive Order No. 10925 used affirmative action for the first time by instructing federal contractors to take "affirmative action to ensure that applicants are treated equally without regard to race, color, religion, sex, or national origin." JFK favored a weak form of affirmative action that involved eliminating discrimination and expanding educational and employment opportunities.

Discrimination and inequality based on race, ethnic background, and/or gender is a social disease that must be curbed. Quota systems and reverse discrimination preferences to create a culturally diverse environment was necessary in the 60's and 70's. In contemporary society, however, preferential treatment based on anything other than qualification creates a new social disease. Treating one race differently than another, that's still racism. The reason there were such high drops in admissions in UC Berkley and UCLA is because their admissions offices suddenly dropped their quota systems. It just so happened that there were 61% and 36% more qualified white students at that time. Affirmative action, by creating eliminating ethnicity, race, and gender as a considering factor, creates an equal opportunity society. After that, if you're still concerned with the problem of non-whites getting work and school, you need to look at the preferential treatment of the education society and you need

Affirmative Action was not put in place to only support minorities. It also helped women, of every race. Women have not always been allowes to work in certain fields and plenty of women were turned down from jobs just because of their gender. As I read through these comments, there are so many people think Affirmative Action was started to only assist minorities. Do some research before participating in a discussion with a topic as sensitive as this one. You all sound idiotic.

Affirmative action is not necessarily perfect for it has its ups and downs. However, affirmative action has help women in the working field, minority groups, and people with disability uplift themselves. People have to take into consideration if inequality did not exist then their would be not need for affirmative action. Affirmative action has come along way throughout the centuries and still continues to prevail. Affirmative may not be a fast but it has make progress, which is more significant. This world needs affirmative action to help the disadvantage get ahead.

Well I look at it as this yes there are way to many people in the world who do still discriminate but noone can say that yes im black or im a minority so i should get this job over the just as qualified white person. I am white and I have been to many places that didnt like me for being white. I was not around for slavery nor has my family owned slaves. I personally have never mistreated some based on race religion or anything else and I feel like I should not have to be judged and made to feel badly for what others did. There are just as many black americans playing the race card and discriminating against whites. As far as affimitive action I do believe it is a good thing to an extint but like everything people take it to far. Like the person who said it is helping them become an RN Im sorry but I wouldnt want anyone treating me who had a 2.6 gpa in school to me that person doesnt deserve a job unless they can prove that they actually know the material.

affirmative action is just insulting to the minorities. Why not get in because you are smarter rather than because of your race?

Ok Right know to start off i am white and i am a male so i am not part of the minority, but I believe that this is discrimination people have posted that this is to make up for past wrongs I agree with this but also disagree yes their should be amends but punishing people who didn't do anything is wrong! I didn't own slaves. I didn't segregate. I didn't do anything yet if I'm higher qualify (which I may not be) then some one else yet they need to fill a quota so they choose a less qualified guy. THAT IS DISCRIMINATION! Decarlose were you a slave were you racially segregated? No. were your ancestors? Yes. They deserve amends they were the ones segregated. Not you. I'm not saying you don't work hard but if you don't work hard enough to get the job and someone else does they should get the job not you. They should have the interviewer talk through a microphone and you talk through a microphone and you should both be blind folded that way no one can form racial or sexist hatred.
