As I sit in front of my TV watching BET, I ask myself do these music videos have an adverse effect on our children. It can be different artists and different songs, but these videos always have the same concept. Several guys at a club or a party dancing around with half naked women dropping it like its hot. Do any of these artist have any original ideas? You think by now that this concept would be played out. But I guess as long as these artist are able to go triple platinum and the record companies keep making money who cares how it effects the children.

Lets face it, the people who mostly watch these videos are preteens, teenagers, and people in their early twenties. The impact that these videos have had on the younger generation is obvious. If you walk through some of these high schools or even junior high schools, some of these girls look like they are dressed to meet up with a pimp, instead of going to math class. I have even seen girls under the age of ten imitating some of the dance moves that they seen on these videos. A lot of girls feel it is o.k. to dress and act this way, because they are bombarded with these images on a daily basis. They feel this the best way for them to get the attention of boys.

These music videos also have an effect on our young men. When boys see these videos with a bunch of women being treated like sex objects, they think it is o.k. for them to treat the girls they know the same way. They think it is o.k. to call a young lady out of her name or even touch her in places she doesn't want to be touched, because this is what they see on TV everyday.

I believe in freedom of speech and I am against censorship, but I also believe that the artist, record companies, and television networks need to start showing more responsibility in what they put out to the public. If they don't, we are going to have a generation of men who grow up not respecting women, and women who have no respect for themselves.

Takeaways
  • What impact does music videos have on our children?
  • Do music videos cause boys to not respect girls?
  • Do music videos cause girls to have a low self-esteem?

Brandon who cares if you are in an advanced placement course. I definitly agree with Ms.Murray. However it goes deeper than that, its not just music videos sending a message to young girls that they should be sexual objects to men. Look at all the magazines next time your at the store, look at the television shows, and just look at the history of womens' struggle to finally be heard in a society still being dominated by men. Remember it wasn't to long ago that we gained our right to vote.

I am an Advanced Placement Literature & Composition student at my school, and I believe that was possibly some of the most childish writing I have ever seen. It was a poorly formed argument to begin with, and at the end it sort of trailed off like the writer suddenly had to use the restroom. Furthermore, it had no reason to be written because I don't believe it's an issue that needs attention; the media, our peers, our superiors, and our inferiors will always have a sociological influence on the way we as humans develop, for better or for worse. I admire the writer for taking an opinion, but this article deserves little better than a half a star out of five.

I do strongly agree with this article, I mean it's not only on BET it's on other things as well, yeah teenage girls now watching this stuff do copy what they see, and guys do treat girls with disrespect, I mean not all guys but majority of the guys! Thanks for writing this and showing people what is truly going on in this world!!
