In a press release, Nintendo announces that both Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii have achieved record-breaking sales numbers for the Thanksgiving week.

Nintendo was more than thankful when they announced the humongous sales success of both its systems, the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii during the holiday. At the combine sales of over 1 million units for the week, these two behemoths made this Thanksgiving week the biggest sales week ever for Nintendo.

The Thanksgiving week is among the biggest week for sales, especially on Black Friday. This is because families that have Thanksgiving dinner together will want to shop together the following day. Retailers accommodate Black Friday by opening early and offering door-buster deals.

Online retailers also have their own super sales day called Cyber Monday, which takes place the Monday after Thanksgiving week. Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii sales from Cyber Monday were not included in the press release.

Even without the Cyber Monday numbers, Nintendo manages to post record numbers. Over 653,000 units of Nintendo DS were sold last week, breaking the record weekly sales of 600,000 units previously held by the Game Boy Advance.

Nintendo has always been the dominating figure in the handheld gaming market, from the original Game Boy to Game Boy Advance to the Nintendo DS. Many companies have tried to compete with Nintendo in the handheld market but all of them have failed.

The biggest rival for Nintendo is Sony's PSP. In the beginning, sales between the two handheld systems were neck to neck. However, when Nintendo released the Nintendo DS Lite (a redesign of the Nintendo DS) last year, the Nintendo DS left the PSP behind in the dust sales-wise. While the PSP is doing well in sales, it is nowhere near the economic success of the Nintendo DS.

The Nintendo Wii sales in the last week weren't too shabby either. It manages to sell over 350,000 units, the second highest sales week for the Nintendo Wii (the highest was when the Nintendo Wii launched). Pretty incredible, considering that Nintendo said that the Nintendo Wii will by supply-constrained for the holiday season.
