In some avenues of medical research and development, there is a changing focus. Where we once viewed these conditions as brain disorders, today we are finding they may be complications arising from complications outside of the brain. While psychotropic medications continue to be a leading sale among medications in the United States, many medical practitioners are turning to other options in treating these health conditions.
If you are the parent of a child who suffers from a complication such as ADHD, autism or even depression, and your physician has diagnosed the complication as related to a brain or cognitive complication, it may be prudent to inquire further. In the opinion of some healthcare professionals, these conditions may actually be systemic in origin rather than originating in the brain. Therefore, to use psychotropic medications, we may be missing the opportunity to managing the underlying cause of disease which may be, instead, a physiological complication.
When looking at environmental, nutritional and metabolic complications, we can find some degree of imbalance. In children and adults who suffer from ADHD, autism, depression and other related "brain" disorders, the complication may be attributed to a physiological complication that is, instead, modified by diet and exercise. In an approach to total body healthcare, physicians who manage a child with these types of health complications commonly look to other treatment options to use in lieu of, or in supplement to, prescription medications.
