One of life's most rewarding activities, volunteering, has become a thing of the past. People say they don't have the time. They use the excuse that they are just too busy with their jobs or their kids.

Young people do not volunteer as their parents once did. What has changed so much that we are too busy to give a little time to others? Have we as a nation become so self centered, that we can't donate a little of our time?

I recently attended the Arkansas Cattlemen's Association annual convention. I had opportunity to visit with a few people who have been in this association for decades. These people confirmed that the number of members has decreased each year. Attendance to this event has also decreased. In our conversation, we related to each other how few people we have in our local organizations also.

When we have are local cattlemen's meeting, only twelve to twenty members of approximately one hundred forty members will attend.

My husband and I belong to the local Lions Club. We are in our forties and we are the youngest couple in the club. Everyone else is over age fifty-five. There are approximately sixteen members in this club.

My husband is a volunteer firefighter for our fire department. There are approximately twelve firefighters and first responders out of approximately six hundred members. These twelve and their families perform most of the duties for the fundraisers to support the department.

When the kids were younger, we took them to many of our volunteer events. They picked up trash along the roadside. They helped set up tables and chairs for fundraisers. They watched us prepare for and work at volunteer events. I hope this example that we set for the kids will give them some will to volunteer, as they get older.

If people would try to help with an event at least once a year, it would help to keep good organizations running. These people would also get to experience a satisfied feeling of doing something good for others without expecting something in return.

(ran out of room!) That is what we need, more people willing to give of self in a selfless manner. As a matter of fact, I am reading a book about the founding fathers of America (entitled the 5000 year leap) and all of them from George Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, etc. believed in and established our government on people donating their time. Washington and many, many others did not take any pay for any of the work they contributed to this nation and not all of them were rich. Most worked hard at other jobs or farming in order to make their own way as well as give of their time (full time). They believed that for a nation to remain free, men and women had to be willing to step up and give freely of themselves, something we do not see a great deal of anymore. Great job and very thought provoking...

Good article! I think people volunteer in ways I probably hadn't thought about. Internet volunteering seems like it would completely take away the human touch. People in America always seem willing to give of their money. It is easy to give money, but not so easy to give of our time. My husband's mom is in her early 60s and has always been such a giving person. She has spent much of her time working in the yards and homes of elderly people in the communities where she has lived. She cooks countless meals for shut-ins and all types of similar things that most wouldn't dream of doing now days. My favorite story of her is a few years ago when she decided to do some major yardwork for an elderly couple who really needed branches cut, yard mowed and weeds pulled, etc. She hauled about 8 of her granchildren (my kids included) to the couple's home and they spent much time and energy in transforming this yard (much to the delight of the couple). The kids loved it and wanted to do it again. Tha

I am also in my 40's and although I think your article is great, I don't agree. I know many young people who are active volunteers, and it seems to me that volunteering is more popular than ever. However, I think the method of volunteering has changed. People no longer join the types of clubs that you mentioned, but instead do a lot of things virtually via the internet now.
