In reality, your competition is not that competitive. Those large housecleaning companies charge twice as much due to overhead. They also have a long list of things they won't do. You practically have to clean the house before they come. Advertise that you will do the dirty jobs the other companies put up their noses at. Yes, I'll be happy to clean out your litter box! They will love you.
You can even require the customer to provide all cleaning supplies. This way you will not need to invest any money to start. Besides, their house will be cleaned with all the products they prefer. If you would like to get your own supplies, check out the dollar store. They usually sell many low cost cleaning items there. You can start advertising with signs or even printing out flyers on your computer. That is what I did to advertise my housecleaning services. If concerned with legalities, you may want to check on business licensing in your area. Usually a business license is about $10.
You might even consider expanding your services. Advertise that you will clean out the garage and pick up the yard. Many people procrastinate on jobs like that. Offer to do the housecleaning they hate the most. Read about housecleaning tips and organizing spaces. You can pass these on to customers who will appreciate the information. Once you get a few jobs, have some cheap business cards printed out. If you start cleaning houses often, you may want to get a separate phone number just for the housecleaning business.
