If you're anything like me, the thought of a chocolate soda sounds disgusting. Why would anyone want to make a chocolate-flavored soft drink? Some people might say that Jones Soda has found some success in making strange or unusual flavors, so it shouldn't be surprising that another company has decided to try something different. This time the folks over at Dr. Pepper are making the change.

Dr. Pepper has been one of my favorite drinks for a number of years now. I switched to their Diet Dr. Pepper brand a few years ago because it was the only diet drink without that strange aftertaste. They've made a few variations on their original formula, most notably the vanilla and berry versions from a few years ago. This time around they went with chocolate, and not just chocolate, but chocolate and cherries.

The newest version is Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry Chocolate. The flavor only comes in the diet version, which is nice for those who drink diet soda, but sometimes feel the need for something different. This one is definitely different. Along with changing the formula, they've also tinkered a little with the label, adding an image of chocolate covered cherries, and a strange silver sun shape.

The first thing you have to notice is that the color isn't the typical brown soda color, but more of a reddish brown. When pouring it into a glass, the foam on the top was a fairly red color, which dissipated when the foam disappeared. It also had a very strong flavor of real chocolate covered cherries. As I'm not a big fan of the candy, the smell was a little too strong. A friend who loves chocolate covered cherries couldn't get over how much the Diet Dr. Pepper smelled like chocolate covered cherries.

When will we see the Chocolate Cherry DP on the grocery shelves? Or will it be limited to one area?
