Lately, everyone has been talking about how much the twelve days of Christmas would cost you in this day and age. One article published on Associated Content calculated that it would cost $19,507.25! Well, that's just the cost of the traditional American twelve days of Christmas. What about the Canadian twelve days of Christmas?

Yes, this is real. There is a Canadian twelve days of Christmas song out there. I just heard it for the first time this season about three days ago. It is one of my favorite holiday songs! Of course this is a funny spoof song, but it still sings about real, tangible gifts. This holiday song is sung by the fictional Canadian brothers, Bob and Doug McKenzie. These brothers hosted a sketch called "The Great White North" on SCTV (Second City Television). Bob was played by Rick Moranis and Doug was played by Dave Thomas.

The thing that keeps the cost of the Canadian twelve days of Christmas so low is two-part. First, the gifts are very cheap and can be picked up at almost any common retail store. Second, days 9, 10, and 11 are fast forward through, producing $0.00 for no new gifts! Day 12 is mentioned, but again nothing new is given.

Let's break this song down into the cost of each day...

On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

A beer in a tree

Cost: About $.75. (cost of a 24 pack of beer, $18, divided by 24)

On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

2 Turtlenecks

Cost: $8 a piece x 2 = $16

On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

3 French toasts

Cost: About $5 a plate x 3 = $15

On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

4lbs of back bacon

Cost: $9 per pound x 4 = $36

On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

5 Golden Toques (Canadian word for a hat hat like what a jockey wears)

Cost: Around $25 each x 5 = $125

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

6 Packs of two-fours (24 packs of beer)

Cost: $18 per pack x 6 = $108

On the seventh day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

7 Packs of smokes

Cost: Average $4 per pack x 7 = $28

On the eighth day of Christmas my true love gave to me:

8 Comic books

Cost: $3 per book x 8 = $24

On the ninth day of Christmas:

Nothing!

Cost: $0

On the tenth day of Christmas:

LOL! You got this from the Great White North, eh? Seriously, I heard on another TV show that the cost of the 12 days, per the original song, was more like $60,000 in the US - but I don't know what exactly they used to determine that!

I love the Mckenzie brothers and go and watch them at their nursing home when they are still coherent enough to put on their act :-) Very funny song and commentary.
