Oral Roberts University Turns a New Leaf

Big changes have been happening recently at Oral Roberts University. Richard Roberts is gone for good, ORU will soon be out of debt thanks to a $70 million pledge, and the Board of Regents is listening to alumni. Yes, things are changing for good at Oral Roberts University.

Many strongly conservative and religious organizations are resistant to change and Oral Roberts University has been no exception. As a matter of fact, male students are still not allowed to have beards under the current dress code. So when a scandal erupted

at Oral Roberts University on October 2nd this year, no one was surprised that Richard Roberts denied everything and planned on continuing business as usual. No one could've foreseen where Oral Roberts University would be now, less than two months later.

After several professors were fired, allegedly for presenting a document containing a list of wrongdoings by former Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts and his family to the school's Board of Regents, the former professors filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination. Richard Roberts immediately made several statements including a denial of all wrongdoing and a note, claimed to be written by God through Roberts's hand, that said the professors were just trying to use blackmail and extortion against him.

A week after the lawsuit was first made public, Richard Roberts and his wife Lindsay appeared on Larry King Live, continuing to deny all wrongdoing, and Richard Roberts stated that he would not step down because he had done nothing wrong. Just over a week after that, Richard Roberts announced that he was taking a temporary leave of absence, his father, Oral Roberts, flew back into town and declared that his son, Richard Roberts, would soon be back in his position as President of Oral Roberts University. Other than some revisions to the professors' lawsuit, including some allegations of possible sexual misconduct by Lindsay Roberts, not much else happened for about a month.

My cousin attended the King's college in California. She was disappointed that it was nothing near like what is espoused in Jack Hayford's teachings. Not much spiritual life or passion among faculty or students. A great amount of Pastor Jack worship by the institution instead. Too bad. She left.

Hope the thing about Pastor Jack isn't true. I've been an admirer of the integrity of his ministry for years.

It's no secret within the ivory tower chambers of the charismatic christian Higher Education community that for years dubious behaviours were being practiced at ORU by the Roberts elite. A number of highly placed ORU staff left long ago due to their insider knowledge of the goings-on there. They knew disclosure was inevitable and did not want to be associated with the fallout. Unfortunately certain of these did not learn from their experiences there and spread ORU's infectious unethical practices to the new charismatic institutions they swarmed to such as TKC&S. If Jack Hayford is wise he will expose what has gone on behind the scenes of his institution before it is likewise too late.

I am so glad that things are going to turn around for the university. I am a Christian, and it is so sad to think that a school could suffer so much, because of greed and the desire for personal wealth. Too many Christians are living excessively, flaunting their material possessions, while others are suffering because of it. To think that the university has been in disrepair, while the families' pockets have been lined with gold, is inexcusable. I believe that God warned them continually, and they failed to listen. When Richard Robert's first wife wrote a book about the lavish lifestyle of all the Roberts long ago, she was ridiculed for revealing the truth. This must have been going on for quite some time. Let's pray that the university will once agin get back to what they do best-academics. Great article!!!!!! I love all your articles in this series! And it had a happy ending after all! :)

I am happy about the path that it seems ORU has a chance to go. However, there is a new proposal to draw Regents University and ORU closer together. I feel this is trading one evil for another. We need to focus on rebuilding the university before considering new partnerships

I attended ORU in the 89-90 school year and any respect I had for Richard Roberts, which wasn't much to begin with, quickly disappeared. I remember when his sister (whose name I can't recall--again, that over 40 thingy) decided to take a job elsewhere because she got tired of butting heads with him over every stupid thing like not allowing women to wear pants when the temperature dropped below 20F--that kind of crap. In an assembly, he openly humiliated her and said she was out of the will of God, blah, blah, blah. I was friends with her niece who was attending there so I was an insider to a lot of unpleasantness. You notice I attended only one year. Glad to see someone there finally has some sense!

This is a well written article. I have been following this about ORU since the beginning.

Good riddance. Criminal charges would be a nice addition. Perhaps it would send a message to others who are similarly making a mockery of Christianity.
