Most of us have had years when we had to find ways to celebrate Christmas on a budget. Many people have to celebrate Christmas on a shoestring budget every year. I've had more than my fair share of lean Christmas holidays. As a result, I've learned some tips for making my Christmas budget money stretch without feeling deprived. Here are some tips for having a fun Christmas without breaking the bank.

It's not necessary to send a Christmas card to everyone that you vaguely know. Even if you buy Christmas cards at the trusty dollar store, the cost of postage can really add up. If you just can't stand the thought of eliminating people on your Christmas card list, send them postcards and save on postage costs. Or go high tech and send a Christmas card to everyone without spending a dime on postage. How? Use one of the many online sites that offer ecards and send them by email.

Colorful fruits and nuts make pretty Christmas decorations that won't go to waste. Gather pine cones, pine boughs, and other natural items to use for Christmas decorating. Visit the dollar stores for holiday scented candles.

Free or very inexpensive Christmas entertainment isn't difficult to find if you know where to look. Check your local newspaper or ask friends and neighbors about local entertainment. Almost all schools have a Christmas concert or play that's free or inexpensive to attend. Many churches also offer free Christmas choir concerts or religious plays. Go to Christmas parades. Gather some friends or co-workers and go caroling.

If you already subscribe to an online service that delivers movies to your home, add Christmas theme movies to your list. You can watch a Christmas movie every day if you like. And don't forget all of the Christmas entertainment on regular television during the holiday.

My first stop for Christmas presents when I'm on a strict budget is at the dollar stores. I don't mean discount stores. I'm talking about the stores where everything is priced at a dollar or less. Don't think that you can't find anything of value at these stores.

Takeaways
  • Christmas on a budget doesn't have to be dreary.
  • Homemade gifts are often more appreciated.
  • Skip postage and send ecards for Christmas.
