What Is Claudication?
Claudication is usually a symptom of peripheral arterial disease. This circulatory problem is results when the arteries that are supposed to carry blood to your limbs (your legs or arms) are damaged somehow.
Atherosclerosis is usually the culprit. When the arteries in your arteries are clogged with cholesterol and fat, it causes the arteries to become narrow. As a result, blood isn't able to get through those arteries the way it should.
If you are suffering from calf pain and are under 50 years old, chances are you aren't suffering from claudication. However, while claudication in those under 50 is very rare, it isn't unheard of.
Claudication pain isn't necessarily limited to the calves. You can also feel the pain in your feet, thighs, or even your buttocks. And, remember, you can also experience claudication in your arms.
While claudication is usually the symptom of a more serious problem, claudication itself can be a painful, and even debilitating, condition.
What Are the Signs of Claudication?
Just because your legs hurt when you exercise or go for a walk doesn't necessarily mean you are suffering from claudication. However if, along with pain, your toes turn blue, or your feet feel unusually cold, you could be suffering from claudication.
Are You Suffering from Claudication?
If you even think you are suffering from claudication, you should see a doctor immediately. Claudication is often a sign of peripheral vascular disease, a more serious, underlying medical problem that. And, if left untreated, peripheral vascular disease can be life threatening.
