Although illegal immigration is essential to the dynamics of the U.S. economy and for sustaining its pace in the creation of jobs, many American citizens believe that illegal immigrants can become a black hole on social services and public charges upon the major areas in the United States that receives these vastnesses of immigrants. Because there is a shortage of unskilled labor in many segments of the U.S. economy, numerous low-skilled positions are being filled by illegal immigrant workers. Without these workers, the productivity and economic growth of the economy would be slower and there would be fewer jobs for skilled labor. Also, by filling these unskilled labor openings, illegal immigration contributes to keeping the U.S. economy prosperous and affluent. The U.S. economy indeed benefits from illegal immigrants in who supply foreign workforce that complements rather than competes with the local workforce in the United States.

At issue is whether illegal immigrants in the country fuel the economy and the labor market or whether they cost American tax-payers their money. Since the local government is the first to provide public services such as health care and education to the community, many local government officials have expressed their concerns that illegal immigrants are a burden on their budgets and do not contribute tax revenues in what they cost in public services and those includes incarceration and medical care. One legislative director even went as far as saying, "it costs us millions per year" (Preston). While these public services are important to the American public, it is also very important to illegal immigrants as they establish a permanent living space in the U.S. where they can call home.

I'm not really sure of the connection, but from what I can tell, the wages of American workers are continuing to drop, at least around where I live. My first guess is that one way or another, businesses will get their cheap labor. If they can't hire illegals, they will outsource as much as possible, and in the case of the service industries and the trades, they will drive wages and benefits down and prices up. Offhand, I'd say that's what's been happening. Globalization is here to stay whether we like it or not. Who profits and who is harmed by it is still ultimately up to all of us.

Well-written and researched, though I disagree. This is an old argument, that illegals benefit the economy and we can't survive without them. You can find experts on both sides. And citing La Raza and a group of illegal immigrant lawyers is not a great way to bolster your case, as these sources are biased. I've discussed this topic extensively in my own AC article. I don't really care whether illegals benefit the economy because: 1. they are breaking the law (read "illegal"); 2. many are committing other crimes that hurt PEOPLE as well as property; and, most importantly, 3. they dilute the value of citizenship. Gangsters contribute a lot to the economy; that doesn't mean they're good for America. A major reason why the Roman Empire fell was because it didn't know who was a citizen and who wasn't. We need a fair guest worker program and immigration reform to keep track of who belongs here and who doesn't. Otherwise America as we know it will cease to exist.

As a Hispanic and a US Citizen I must disagree with the writer. The writer says that Illegals helps the economy. I don't see it that way. First, they don't make enough to really live in the US, How can they be a helping force to the USA economy other than help greedy corporations make more profits? The same corporations that will rather break the law than to pay fair wages. How can they help the economy when their main purpose in life is to send money home? How they can pay their ways when they don't make enough money to live in the USA? How can they help by paying taxes when they don't make enough to pay taxes? Why are we going to reward CRIMINALS that blatantly break our laws and burn our flags? Who is going to pay for their medical bills? Who is going to pay for their kids' education? The bottom line is: There are laws and rules and they are there for a very good reason; Regulation and control. We already are swamped with legal immigrants we have no need to allow this mess to ge

Since when is it "racist" to insist that those wanting to live here permanently do it the way my grandparents, my best friend's wife, and every other honest foreign national did it? No, it has devalued many unskilled and even skilled American labores (such as OTR truck drivers). A $10.00/hour job used to be pretty easy to get, but now with the influx of illegal labor, good luck starting anywhere for $8.00 / hour, or less. Like it or not, American benefits should be solely for LEGAL American citizens, and it doesn't make me an "evil racist neo-con" for feeling as such.

In my opinion, giant burritos alone offset the costs of illegal immigration. That and Latina women. Rowr.

If you came home and found someone who had entered illegally -- broken in -- sitting in your favorite chair in your living room, watching your TV, who not only said he wasn't leaving but demanded that you feed him and give him a place to sleep, what would you do?

Very interesting but I do not agree

Great insightful article.

Wow, this is so poorly written that I had to read it twice because of all the grammar distractions - but I get the point. I don't agree, but I understand that writing objectionable material is a good way to make money here. Good job! I think you wrote something so objectionable and obviously arguable that many will bite. I suggest you try the theory that we never landed on the moon next, that might also get some responses. Good luck.

Sorry, but that is a bunch of bull. What makes you think we have a shortage of unskilled labor workers. Do you know how many people are out of work? A company I worked for years ago would only hire hispanic commercial cleaning companies because of the low wages they accept. Other companies stop bidding on the jobs because the hispanic and asian companies would low ball. I feel for any immigrant because they want to move here and prosper, but they definitely are costing US taxpayers more money. First of all, immigrants spend less of their income in the US. They send their paychecks home to help their family. Next, many illegals are getting paid under the table, so there is no contribution to taxes. And last, many immigrant families commune together, therefore spending less than the typical american families. We still give social services to immigrants and all in all, its costing us more.

Wow, you did a great job of starting a heated discussion! However, it is unfortunate that so many people have such strong opinions and beliefs on an important issue they have done NO research on. God Bless the U.S.A.!!! WE ARE A COUNTRY OF IMMIGRANTS!!! The Spaniards and Pilgrams didn't have passports and visas when they came here.

There is a free website that has video lessons and activities to help you prepare for your naturalization interview. My brother was preparing to become a U.S. citizen and came upon this site. I think they are new and will continue to add more free lessons. The videos and activities are really good. It seems to be an online school. The website is VTC24.com
