If the victim of a murder is a college student, the case will get massive news coverage. The murderer will most likely be found, and be put in for a long time if not forever. Comparisons made to murders involving college students and other murders concludes that if there is a college student that is the victim of the crime, the press will put much more attention on the case then if the victim was not in college.

There are several explanations. First, the future of the nation depends on education of young adults, and when one of these gets robbed of their life it robs the whole nation. One also likes to think of college as a safe place to send the kids, and when reality proves otherwise, the news will sell extremely well.

A study conducted in 2001, found that out of 15,980 murders committed in the United States the same year, only between 40 and 60 murders involved college students on or off- campus locations. That means that only 0.3% of all murders involve college students.

Regardless of the statistics, for some people that does not matter anymore. The families of Terrance Aeriel, Dashon Harvey and Iofemi Hightower have lost their loved ones due to a robbery that ended with murder in Newark earlier this year. Aeriel, Harvey and Hightower were all in college and university when they were lined up against a school wall and were shot in the head. Neither one of them had a record with the police, and was excellent students.

Laura Dickinson was murdered in her dorm room at Eastern Michigan University around a year ago. The investigation was kept in silence after her body was found half naked and with a pillow covering her head. Police also found semen on her leg. Later investigators arrested a fellow student Orange Amir Taylor III, 20, and only after this the university acknowledged the truth that a murder had in fact taken place on campus.

A student of Morehouse College in Clayton County, Carlnell Walker Jr., was brutally murdered by four former students of the same college. This prestigious Black male college has in the aftermath suffered from several other more minor scandals.

I agree I should have named the source right there, but it is in the third paragraph under the keyword study. Thanks for constructive criticism though!

Ok- I'm not in the habit of throwing stones because, certainly we all live in glass houses here. But, it is difficult to read a news article that is not based in facts, but opinion. For example- the first paragraph.. -case will get massive news coverage - murderer will most likely be found- ? says who? etc.

Your accusations of me being race biased does not make any sense and is as far fetched as you can possibly come. The point I wanted to get there was how few murders actually involve college students, and for you to tell me that I would defend someone who killed 30 people because of race is absolutely ridiculous. Yes, there are many more I could have mentioned but the point was not to write in depth about every college killing that has been, nor the ones with the most dead. tlc - I'm sorry that you didn't like the article, but apart from what Rachel Krech corrected me on, how am I a laughing stock? Pam Gaulin - Thank you so much. It's just horrible how these things happen.

Ok, first of all I apologize for the typo about when Behl's body was found. That was an honest mistake and I am sorry for that. Secondly, I said Mr. Taylor killed Dickinson because of the facts. If we can see that it snows outside we're not in the Sahara Desert, but I'll state now that even though there was a mistrial because of one juror, I BELIEVE he killed her. So for you to question my credibility after this, please do. Just remember who you're defending, and then you come after me? Doesn't make any sense. Thirdly, the Morehouse killing did involve a student and four former students from the same institution. This article is about college students, whether it happens on or off campus is irrelevant.

Peoples media company is apparently a joke. I agree with B's emails. You are a laughing stock. get your facts straight before you disseminate false information. You should take you cite off the internet

It appears that you have somehow found only the cases involving african americans. And in the case of the Morehoue incident the crime occurred not on campus, but at an off campus private dwelling miles form the morehouse campus, and the alleged perpetrators we not even Morehouse students. So this is not really a college crime at all. It appears you have somehow single out only those alleged incidents involving African Americans. There are many more involvling others that you have not even mentioned. How can you possibly miss the most heinous college campus murder case in US history, the murder of 30 Virginia Tech students by a fellow student right there in a campus classroom building? Why did you not mention that one? Was race an issue for you? Of course, your failure to cite this case, and your false statements about the EMU case, put in question the veracity of everything you say.

This is irresponsible for to say that the women at EMU was "murdered". If you don't know, you should have investigated and you would have discovered that after a full court trial of the matter the jury was unable to reach a verdict. Therefore, there has been no determination that a murder occurred by anyone. The defense alleges that Mr. Taylor found the woman, who has a history of heart disease, already dead when he entered herdorm room, and he what he did was engaged in the act of masturbating over her dead body, leaving semen on her leg. As the defense counsel argued in his closing argument, his client may have been "freaky" but he was no "murderer". And apparently, at least one of the jurors agreed with him, and a mistrial was declared. So get your facts straight or subject yourself to the possibility of a liable suit.

Interesting article. I remember when a college student was murdered at a local mall when I was in college. It was big news because the murderer was never caught, and still hasn't been to this day.
