I have heard so much controversy concerning the new movie The Golden Compass based upon the book by Phillip Pullman. Many people are planning to picket movie theaters for showing this movie simply because it was written by an atheist.. Here is my opinion on the logic for boycotting this movie:

If you are using a computer to read this article, that is okay as long as you are using anything other than Microsoft. Bill Gates is an atheist. Do not teach your children anything about Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, William Howard Taft, Thomas Edison, Thomas Paine, or Galileo Galilei. They are all atheist.

Be sure to skip great literature when it comes to Ernest Hemingway, Francois Marie Arouet "Voltaire", George Bernard Shaw, George Orwell, Samuel Clemens "Mark Twain", Robert Frost, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Miller, Percy Shelley, or Virginia Woolf. They are all atheist.

Please be sure you do not watch, or let your children watch Star Trek. Gene Roddenberry is an atheist. Like the show ER? Don't watch it or anything else written by Michael Crichton, he's an atheist. Forget Superman movies, Christopher Reeve was an atheist. Do not watch Little Women or Meet me in St Louie during the holiday season, Katharine Hepburn stars in both, and she is an atheist. Burt Lancaster is an atheist, skip his movies. Do not watch anything with William Shatner in the starring role, he too, is atheist as is Gillian Anderson, Janeane Garofalo, Mira Sorvino, and Jodie Foster all wonderful actresses. Do not sing the praises of Lord of the Rings, Sir Ian McKellen is an atheist. There are so many others, I would not have room to list them all.

Do not listen to the music of Dave Matthews, Billy Joel, Randy Newman. They are atheist. Do not sing White Christmas this holiday season, Irving Berlin wrote it, he's an atheist you know!

So was Helen Keller, Alfred Hitchcock, Napoleon Bonaparte, Frank Lloyd Wright, Susan B. Anthony, and Vincent Van Gogh.

Whatever you do, do not go to Disney World, or watch Disney movies, Walter "Walt" Disney was an atheist. Do not read the beloved Peanuts cartoons, Charles Shultz was an atheist.

i completely agree with your article and to everyone saying your boycotting this movie as it insults your beliefs or anything along those general lines, you might have had a point but i dont remember any atheist groups boycotting passion of the christ , that conflicted with our beliefs yet we werent so protective of our ideas or immature enough to be insulted or worried by a movie

The funny thing to me is that I didn't know Pullman was an atheist until the controversy grew into the public eye. As an atheist I thought the series of books was rather religious but I liked them anyway. Believe it or not but the books put forward extremely religious ideas - treating souls as factual, treating the possibility of afterlives as real, and presenting a pantheistic concept of God through the communication of the "dust."

I think it's a good article, in the respect that I think you make your point (and your opinion) clear. However, I don't agree with it. As I posted below, it's the author's intent in which I think this movie should be boycotted...not on his religious (or non-religious) affiliations.

YES, Charles Schultz WAS an atheist. I will not continue to argue this point with anyone. His own words in one of his last interviews were that he had, over the years, become a Human Secular. For those who have no knowledge of "our world" some of the words we use to describe ourselves are, Atheist, agnostic, human secular, freethinker, brights... the list is endless. It all boils down to an absence of belief in a god. Not only did I research Charles Schultz, I am smart enough to pick up a phone and verify facts with those who would know this information. I do not use the internet as a sole source of information. DrDesigns, I appreciate you opinion. Believe it or not, not all atheist are angry atheist. I only get defensive when I feel I am being attacked. Thanks again for your opinions.

Charles Schultz was NOT an atheist. Please research him a little further. I'm boycotting The Golden Compass because I don't want my money going into the pocket of a person who is campaigning against my Lord and Savior. My choice. I'm sure the author wouldn't donate to the Gideons either. Undertandable. He is anti-God, yet when it comes to making a profit from his movie and book sales , he now calls himself a "storyteller". There are plenty of hypocritial Christians out there, I guess there had to be a few hypocritical atheists as well, especially when it comes down to money.

Ana, Again I just want to say that I mean no disrespect to you or your belief. I could be wrong with my facts (Lord knows the Internet is full of bad facts) and if I am please beg my pardon. My only point was to say that not all christians are out for atheists blood. We love all and respect all. Dennis

I did research for my article. Abe Lincoln and Walt Disney were indeed atheist. Walt Disney so much so that he refused to have "in God we Trust." on his Disney "money". Charles Shultz was an Atheist, and could not stand the sugary sweet guardian angel images and references to god in the Family Circus do to his disbelief. I was a Baptist, and then a Practicing Catholic for thirty years, all the while knowing that it was a fairy tale. It is hard for atheist to come out of the closet because of the very image that is brought up when the word atheist is thrown out there. I am not rude to folks until they attack my character. Movies such as these should be taken for what they are, entertainment. My 13 year old son and I both saw TLTW&TW. My son read Narnia. We both liked it. It was no more than a fantasy movie for both of us. I, however would never take my younger children to see Narnia, LOTR, or Golden Compass. Any of them would be scary for them. It needs to be age appropriate.

I beg to differ that this is a good article. Yes, we all have our beliefs and we can listen to and watch what we want, but some of your facts are wrong. First of all the problem with the book and movie isn't that an atheist wrought it, but that there is violence towards children, a man seeking God to kill him, and disrespect towards the church. Also, Charles Schulz was not an atheist, but a practicing Lutheran until his death. Abe Lincoln and Walt Disney were not atheists either. I mean no disrespect, but please don't put all christians into a group of atheist bashing haters as we are not. By the way, Christians aren't afraid that a movie will change their beliefs either.

The Chronicles of Narnia was written with love, and had a hint (or twist) of Christian philosophy wrapped in it. Golden Compass was written to counter Narnia, written with ill intent. You have to judge on the author's life as to his intent. He promotes atheism and wants to kill God in the minds of children...how much clearer of an intent can you get? Nevertheless, this is a good article. As an adult, these movies/books shouldn't "shake" anyone's faith.

Your tone was just as hateful toward Christians (I assume that was your intent). Enjoy the penny you made from my page views and I will pray for you. God Bless.

Wow, not only is your tone very hateful, which is what I have come to expect from Christians, you are ignorant as well. I'll bet you win a lot of people over to your way of thinking with that winning personality! How about you read and watch what you want, and I'll read and watch what I want? As far as an argument for a god is concerned, your lack of logic, thought, or proof is insulting and ridiculous. BTW, I grew up a Baptist preachers daughter, so nothing you say can really effect me. I have heard all of the fairy tales. been there, done that, bought the tshirt.

And by the way this nation was not "founded" by the Native Americans. This "land" was inhabited by Native Americans and the nation was established by the colonist once independece was won. One nation under God I must add.
