If you have a large family and you want to stick to a budget during the holidays, it can seem an impossible task. You want to make sure that everyone has a good time and gets lots of goodies. In any family this can be stressful, but in a large family it can be hard to carry out. There are some things that you can do to assure a wonderful gift giving holiday get-together with your large family.

The first thing to remember when looking for gifts is that the Christmas holiday is about family; not the gifts themselves. The gifts should represent what that person means to you and not how much it costs, or how "hot" a particular item is during the shopping season. Keeping this in mind, let's look at some simple strategies that you can use to make certain that your family has a happy holiday.

One idea is to use the "Secret Santa" gift giving approach. A good way to go about implementing this strategy is to talk with the other members of your family to decide exactly how you will put this plan into action. You will want to make a detailed list of everyone in your family, their ages, likes and dislikes, etc. Then you can write down the names and relevant information onto slips of paper for others to draw from a Santa hat. If you plan it right, you can hold the name-drawing after your family's Thanksgiving meal to kick off the Christmas season.

Whether you use the "Secret Santa" method or not, you can also decide on exactly how much will be spent on the gift. Keep the budget reasonable, and you should have no problems finding a great gift. Another idea to go along with the budget is to ask your family members if they would rather exchange personal hand-made gifts. You might be surprised at how creative your family can be when given the task of making something for a loved one instead of just buying it.
