Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, is running for the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 2008. There has been a lot of fanfare made about his religion, Mormonism, and what it really stands for. Just like John F. Kennedy, Mitt Romney is casting doubt about his religion aside, instead focusing on what kind of leader he will be. But what exactly is Mormonism? What do Mormons believe in? Listed below are some of the Mormons' basic beliefs, which may give a better understanding of what Mitt Romney brings to the Presidential race.

Mormons believe in God. Mormons carry the belief that God created the earth, just like Christians do. They believe that God created Adam and Eve, and the choice of temptation in the Garden of Eden. God also gave people free will, allowing people to choose what to believe in or not believe in. The Mormons also believe that God is the Father, Jesus Christ is the Son and the Holy Ghost plays an important part in the Godhead.

Mormons believe that by following proper scriptural guidelines, all mankind may be saved. By following the principles and ordinances of the Gospel, faith, repentance, baptism by immersion and laying on of hands of the Holy Ghost, man may be able to return to God one day. Faith is a blind belief in God, one that you cannot see. Repentance is acknowledging ones' wrongdoing and striving to not cross that line again. Baptism by immersion is being baptized by a person who holds the proper authority, totally immersed under water. And receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, who provides prompting of the Spirit, is by being confirmed, again by proper authority, by laying on of hands with prayer.

In reading your little piece on Mormonism, I believe that your either a Mormon or you have not researched your material on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons), or both. What you wrote was correct on the surface, however, it is what lies beneath which reveals the difference. Suggested reading would be what is written by one of the best Mormon theologians , Bruce R. McConkie's Mormon Doctrine - Bookcraft. Salt Lake City Utah. There is a great difference in basic doctrine. As for Mitt Romney, He would have made the best president that we have seen in many recent ones.

I don't hold a candidate up to examine his religeon. I believe that is private. I liked the article and felt you presented a fair and honest review of what mormonism is. I would vote for anyone that is good, honest and ethical.

Interesting - I'm intrigued by the whole Romney/Mormon thing, as I've read several books about mormonism. Thanks for a great read!

Great article. I have definitely learned something from this. My favorite articles tend to be what I can learn from, whether they have unsupported beliefs or just politics. Thanks for sharing and teaching.

Good article, I was actually baptized mormon as a child, which as my readers will know now I am agnostic and borderline atheist. However I was raised in Utah and nearly all of my friends growing up were mormon and not one of them ever drank, smoked, did drugs, or even had sex all the way through highschool. I am not an advocate of any religion, and I do not believe any to be true, but I will hand it to mormons, they are some of the best people you will ever meet.

Great article! I personally don't believe that a presidential candidate's religion should matter at all.

Thank you for sharing this, I did not know much about Mormons, but the religion doesn't sound that much different from the Christian faith. I think the media should share some of this information, maybe people would not be as freaked out.
