Although I think I love all Christmas songs Silent Night is my all time favorite. It holds a special place in my heart. Silent Night is a song that embodies the true meaning and spirit of Christmas. It was my mother's favorite song. Family members would gather on Christmas Eve to open one present each. We would eat Christmas cookies and gather around the Christmas tree to sing Silent Night.

Every time I hear the song it brings back fond memories of past holiday seasons. Although my mother and many other family members are no longer here in the physical I can still imagine their voices chime in when Silent Night starts to play. It is a beautiful song that echoes the spirit of Christmas. Singing Silent Night is still very much a part of our holiday tradition.

Although Silent Night is my favorite Christmas song there are several others that have a special place in my heart each holiday season. It is customary for our family to sing Deck the Halls as we put up our Christmas tree, lights and other decorations. The kids especially enjoy helping and singing.

Jingle Bell Rock and Santa Claus is Coming to Town are two other Christmas favorites that the children in our family enjoy. They also like counting down the days to Christmas with The Twelve Days of Christmas. Of course, with each passing day Christmas is closer and everyone gets more excited, especially the kids.

There are so many wonderful Christmas songs it is hard to narrow it down to just a few favorites but here are a few others that I really like.

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear

This was one of my mother's favorite Christmas songs also. I remember singing it as a child. I grew up loving It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.

Go Tell it on a Mountain

This was one of my grandmother's favorite Christmas songs. It remains a family favorite.

Three other family favorites are:

Joy to the World

O Come, All Ye Faithful

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

"Silent Night" was actually a poem written years ago by a priest. He had been called out to give Last Rites to a dying woman and was deeply impressed by the beauty of the night as he returned home. It was winter, very close to Christmas. The priest wrote the poem based on his impressions and gave it to Franz Gruber, the organist for the church. Gruber wrote the melody to accompany the poem.

I think your right about Silent Night; it somehow seems different than the rest; very serene and spirtual to listen to and like you said "keeping with the true meaning of Christmas."

Years ago when I used to celebrate Christmas, I was taught to sing this song in German at school. Sophie

I love this song, too...despite the poem I just wrote that it was not a silent night...The song silen night tells so much of the Christmas story and brings a sense of peace and calm...which was one of the eternal gifts that first Christmas night.
