Old Town San Diego: An historical gem!

In 1969, the city of San Diego celebrated its 200th birthday. After decades of growth and expansion to San Diego’s “New Town”, (currently known as San Diego’s “downtown”) the city felt it was time to bring the attention of its citizens back to the true history of San Diego. An effort to rehabilitate Old Town San Diego was born. Almost forty years later, Old Town San Diego is buzzing with life, culture, and charisma. The birthplace of California shines again and serves as a cultural center for both tourists and locals alike.

The historical importance of Old Town.

Although it no longer stands in Old Town, Father Junipera Serra’s first mission was built here. California’s first schoolhouse, first newspaper office, and a blacksmith’s quarters are also preserved here. The Old Town San Diego Historical Park occupies these nine square blocks of historical treasures, protecting and preserving these unique and crucial elements of San Diego and California history. The sights, sounds, and smells are reminiscent of the lifestyles of citizens who lived here between 1821 and 1872.

Get a taste of Old Town dining.

With several restaurants to choose from, you may find yourself overwhelmed with food choices! Enticed by the smells of fresh corn tortillas, or the sounds of mariachi bands, making a dinner decision could be quite difficult! Consider these tried and true eateries, both reflecting their own flair and interpretation of San Diego culture.

ElIndio
When seeking a restaurant in a foreign city, it is my belief that the best recommendations come from the city’s locals. El Indio is a local favorite, featuring traditional, no fuss Mexican food in a casual environment. A great choice, perhaps for a lunch or dinner on the move, El Indio offers outdoor seating or fast to-go orders. With over sixty years of experience in San Diego, El Indio is without a doubt a great choice for a casual, relaxed dining experience.
