Marbled fondant icing is very simple to make and is a favorite among children. To start all you need are two differently colored fondant icings. Make sure you pick to colors that will look good blended together. I usually use a color plus white, or else two similar shades of the same color, such as a light and dark blue. You can marble together as many colors as you want at a time.
Roll out each color of fondant into a long cylinder. Don't make them too long that you will have trouble working with them, but not too short either. 12 to 15 inches usually works nicely. Also be sure to make all of them roughly the same length and thickness.
Now place your two rolled fondant colors side by side. If you decide to use more than two colors you can add them all in the same way at this point.
The next step is to simply twist the colors together like you are making a breadstick. If you are adding more than two colors braid them. Once you are finished pinch the ends together to make sure they don't fall apart during the next step.
Take the rolled together fondant and fold everything in half. Now you have a fatter fondant roll that is 6 to 8 inches long.
Place this roll on a non-stick surface or lightly sprinkle cornstarch on the counter you are working on. Gently roll out the entire batch.
As you roll you will start to see the marbling effect. How much of a marbling effect you want is up to you. For the minimal amount simply roll out the fondant. If you want more marbling you can twist and fold the fondant multiple times to get the effect you are looking for.
Now your marbled fondant is ready to cover your cake! You can make the entire cake marbled, or cut shapes and designs out of the rolled out fondant and use them as decorations on a solid colored cake.
