Pepsi & Amazon to Offer 1 Million Free MP3 Downloads

Pepsi launched a gigantic promotion a few years ago that saw the company give away nearly a billion free MP3 downloads. The company is looking to have that success once again by starting the promotion on Superbowl Sunday, which is going to be February 3rd. The original promotion saw Pepsi
teaming with iTunes to help give away the MP3 downloads. Amazon will be teaming with Pepsi this time around. The reasoning behind the new partnership is so that Amazon can better promote the new Amazon MP3 store that they recently released. The promotion is certain to give the company much needed visibility.

The way the promotion is going to work this upcoming year is quite simple. You are going to have to drink five Pepsi bottles in order to earn a free song. The company is banking on rewarding those people who are dedicated Pepsi product drinkers. They are also hoping to bring in new customers who are looking to get a free MP3 download. Both Amazon and Pepsi are going to be shelling out some of their own cash to make the MP3's free to the public. It is going to cost them nearly 40 cents per track. This is a lower price than the usual 65-70 cents that Amazon usually places in labels' pockets. As always, there are some companies that may not participate in making their content available for free download.

Sony BMG is one of the few companies that has yet to start selling songs from their label in MP3 format. This has been an issue for quite sometime and has caused a lot of companies to become upset with Sony. Wal-Mart is even being rumored to be threatening the company that they will no longer carry the label in their stores if it does not start supplying their online store with an MP3 format. Industry insiders believe that the promotion that Pepsi and Amazon are having may finally push Sony BMG towards offering their content in MP3 format. It will be interesting to see if the promotion does play a role in this happening. Let us hope that Sony BMG wakes up soon and starts to offer their content as MP3s. This will allow the promotion to to mean even more when considering purchasing Pepsi for the free Amazon download.
