..."And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered." (The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran.)

Spirituality is the recognition that there is Higher Order in the universe; the physical universe is the creation of Higher Intelligence. We can change how we experience the universe in spirit, but we cannot change the universal laws that govern spirit. Spirit does not depart from reality; it must be applied to the natural laws of the universe. Spiritual law and reality do not contradict each other. Action precedes action. Recognition is an action of the brain. What life does for us must be experienced through us within our stream of consciousness. Spirituality cannot be experienced by proxy. We can have others take care of our physical needs, but they cannot press our spirit into outward expression. We can however, develop new hope as we focus our awareness of Spirit expressing through others. This can lead us to the action of spiritual principles. You can prepare yourself to have Spirit move through you. Spirit cannot do anything for you unless it is expressed through you.

The concept of spirituality is a bit abstract. Countless individuals struggle with the difference between spirituality and religion. Spirituality is the recognition of a Higher Order or a Divine Presence in the universe. Religion is the values, rules and explanations we assign to explain how we deal with our reality of a spiritual dimension. Spirituality is feeling good, and at one with the universe. Religion regulates how we try to accomplish this feeling of connectedness. Individuals in recovery programs often describe religion as a way to save your soul and spirituality as a way to save your gluteus maximus. (Edited version.) Spirit is universal; religion is personal. "Is not religion all deeds and all reflections? Your daily life is your temple and your religion." (The Prophet, Kahlil Gibran.)

Takeaways
  • There is a natural desire within each of us to be true to our Likeness.
  • When we are not true to our real nature we feel guilt, shame, remorse and resentment.
  • Spirituality is what separates us humans from the lower forms of life.
