Des Moines knows how to enjoy its waterways.Rather than serve as border lines, the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers are utilized to unite the city's neighborhoods. Several pedestrian bridges provide easy access across the water for foot and bicycle traffic.
Principal Riverwalk, being developed on both sides of the Des Moines River, helps create a cohesive riverfront experience for residents and visitors. Completed facets of the $55 million project include the Brenton Skating Plaza, Union Street Railroad Pedestrian Bridge and Long Look Garden. Located in front of City Hall, Long Look Garden features terraced planter walls, formal landscaping, a large sculpture and a grand staircase.
When fully completed, the Riverwalk's lighted walking paths and bridges will connect Des Moines' six recreational trails. The current trails, varying in length from 2 to 23.7 miles, provide an excellent way to experience the city's parks and waterways.
Visitors will discover that Des Moines is a pedestrian friendly city. Streets in the downtown area are graced with benches, flowers, fountains and sculptures.
Several of the city's popular attractions are located near the rivers.
Des Moines Botanical Center features over 15,000 exotic plants, including one of the best bonsai collections in the country. Large Koi, white catfish, turtles and free-flying birds join the glorious orchids on display in the Center's large dome. Outdoor features include sculptures, water gardens, native plants, herbs and miniature roses.
At Union Park, visitors can admire the Heritage Carousel. Along with horses and rabbits, the 30 hand-carved animals include a tiger, stork, elephant, giraffe, ostrich, panda and zebra. Brightly painted scenes of Des Moines adorn the carousal walls. Riders on the carousal can catch a glimpse of Birdland Marina on the Des Moines River.
Des Moines is home to a "one-of-a-kind" museum. Opened in 2005, the Iowa Hall of Pride honors the achievements of all Iowans from high school students to sports celebrities, entertainers and dignitaries.
