One of the most common themes associated with the Irish is the color green. From the appropriate apparel on St. Patty's Day, to tourists amazed at "the green grass of Ireland." Ireland is going green in another area, as well: in car rentals. Thrifty Car Rental in Ireland is launching a campaign to push the environmentally friendly cars as a responsible part of car rental. The main focus of this isn't hybrid cars (although they are available for rent), but in aiming to reduce the use of resources such as paper, packaging, cleaning chemicals, and efficient energy use.

Thrifty Car Rental Ireland has embraced the eco-friendly term "green" and has put forward several common practices to help lessen their impact on the environment. Recycling includes paper, cardboard, glass, and wash water. There has also been a concerted effort to recycle energy by using wind energy for each car rental area, and recycling of various office equipment is strongly encouraged.

It was during the early part of 2007 that Thrifty Ireland decided that they needed to adopt policies that would cut down on paperwork as much as possible. The environment of car rental naturally lends itself to a lot of paperwork, and so this was a natural area to become more environmentally friendly while becoming more efficient-which would be good for the company, as well as the customer. Technology has allowed most communications to be electronic, helping efficiency, as well as being environmentally friendly by eliminating the majority of paper waste.

These changes haven't just affected customer service to make them more environmentally friendly. Thrifty Car Rental Ireland has also announced that accounting, which is traditionally a paper driven process, is even being switched over to electronic formats. All receipts, contracts, and invoices are scanned into a central network where they are stored for future use, eliminating extra paper waste. Once these documents have been scanned, they are placed in a special receptor until they are securely shredded, and the shredded papers are then recycled.
