The holiday season is upon us. This is a time when family members can cherish the time they spend together. One family tradition that many families have is making Christmas cookies together. What do you do though when you can't find the cookie cutters your children want? Do not panic, there are ways to get around this and still be able to make those sugar cookies in any shape your children wish to have. The only limitations are their imaginations, and of course your mechanical ability to form those shapes.

There are certain items you will need to help form these cookie cutters for shapes that you can not purchase. The easiest is a thin metal hanger since you probably already have these around your house. Straighten the metal hanger out into a straight line and cut it to a reasonable size you need to work with. Then start to make the shape your require. As long as the edges of the hanger are not too sharp, you can even let your children help with this. Have them bend the hanger into the shape they wish for the cookies they want. Explain to them that the simpler shapes will be best, but allow them to use their imagination as they can do this much easier than the other material you can work with which I will explain below. One good shape for them to start with are snowflakes.

Once your child has formed the shape they wish to have their cookies made into, take the hanger and press it into the rolled out cookie dough. Considering a hanger does not have sharp edges, you will still have some work to do. As the parent you will need to trace the shape that was pressed into the dough using the hanger with a sharp object like a knife to make it cut into the cookie dough. Allow your children to press the hanger into the dough and you do the cutting for them.

Takeaways
  • Metal clothes hangers make great items to make cookie cutters out of and allow creativity.
  • Even children can help shape the cookie cutters with these hangers.
  • Don't forget to cut the outline into the dough with a sharp item.
Did You Know?
When using flashing your children will be less involved in the design, but they will be happy that they can cut the shape into the dough themelves and don't need you to trace it for them.
