There are certain items you will need to help form these cookie cutters for shapes that you can not purchase. The easiest is a thin metal hanger since you probably already have these around your house. Straighten the metal hanger out into a straight line and cut it to a reasonable size you need to work with. Then start to make the shape your require. As long as the edges of the hanger are not too sharp, you can even let your children help with this. Have them bend the hanger into the shape they wish for the cookies they want. Explain to them that the simpler shapes will be best, but allow them to use their imagination as they can do this much easier than the other material you can work with which I will explain below. One good shape for them to start with are snowflakes.
Once your child has formed the shape they wish to have their cookies made into, take the hanger and press it into the rolled out cookie dough. Considering a hanger does not have sharp edges, you will still have some work to do. As the parent you will need to trace the shape that was pressed into the dough using the hanger with a sharp object like a knife to make it cut into the cookie dough. Allow your children to press the hanger into the dough and you do the cutting for them.

When using flashing your children will be less involved in the design, but they will be happy that they can cut the shape into the dough themelves and don't need you to trace it for them.
