Amazon has just unveiled a promotion called "Easysell" which can be seen here: www.amazon.com/gp/seller/fba/fba_easysell.html Basically, Amazon is offering $15.00 to anyone willing to try the program as a way to sell books, CDs, old DVDs, etc. . Is it cost-effective? Does it simplify things? Can you make money by sending your books and other items to Amazon and letting them sell and ship them for you, eliminating any need to go to the post office or print your own shipping labels? Is this a nice, quick way to ship off the stuff you don't want to have around the house at Christmas and maybe rake in some money during the year, helping to pay for those holiday gifts?

Maybe so, maybe not. Here is the intriguing part: You can list and sell on any venue and have Amazon ship the products for you.
That is certainly an interesting twist as noted in this question listed in Amazon's questions:

Can I use Fulfillment by Amazon if I dont sell on the Amazon.com Web site?

As noted by Amazon: "Yes. You can ship your product units to us, and we will pick, pack and ship the items to your customers when you tell us to. This allows you to sell your products on other platforms but still take advantage of our fulfillment centers and our experience in shipping products."

In short, you no longer have to store your books or other items at home. Even more tempting.. maybe. But here's my question: what happens if you sell an item on Amazon and another site on the same day? Hmmm?
Here is how the program theoretically works (wonder how it works in actual practice):

You, the potential seller, send in your items to Amazon. They can be books, CDs, old DVDs and/or video games. Then Amazon will keep track of your items, ship them to buyers and send you the money. The $15.00? That is an incentive to try the program. For 60 days, you can try it out for free, plus you get that $15.00.

Takeaways
  • Christmas 2007, Amazon offers $15.00 incentive for EasySell program
  • Amazon wants sellers to let Amazon store and sell their books
  • Is it cost-effective? Pros and cons
Did You Know?
When all is said and done, the savings could be as little as ten cents per book and the pitfalls could be many

Looks like the $15 is no longer available as of July 2008.

I couldn't be more pleased with the timely arrival and excellent condition of the book I purchased recently from FXPORTAPOT.

I'll never sell books again. The post office has managed, in just the last two months, to lose three packages of books, two at the lost mail service in Dallas and one in N.C. UGH!!!

For those who already sell there, just have a look at the seller discussion boards, especially sections of FBA (fulfilled by Amazon). You'll get seller perspective and it isn't the most positive in many cases, leaving me to wonder why they thought this would fly.

I have been selling on Amazon for years now, and have a room for my inventory, I don't think this option is that cost effective, because you still have to pay all the other seller fees as well, at least that is the way I understand it. Great information though.

I'm not sure if I would do this.

Hmm, this doesn't sound like the best way to go to me. Great article!

We sell on Amazon & this just costs too much.

I agree. If you have a lot of hot items to sell, then maybe this program would be okay. But, I think overall, I'd just do it myself and save the hassles and cost.

I sold nearly 400 books and CDs and DVDs on Amazon, and getting them shipped was a real hassle. I also learned that most people only leave feedback when it's negative - usually without giving the seller a chance to "make it right" with the customrer. That said, I still think I wouldn't sign up for this program. Like you, I want to have a little more control over what I'm selling! Nicely written. Since I've been "on vacation" at Amazon since April, I didn't know about this before!

It is interesting, but I don't feel with enough volume to make it pay off for me

Good reporting, I didn't know anything about it.

Interesting, had not heard about this. I don't see why Amazon thinks this is such a great idea, it's nothing new.

interesting to know-- thanks for this... but I will pass

Interesting read ~ the part that would turn me off is having to pay for packaging, shipping & storage to Amazon, then paying again to have unsold books returned to me. While this program would work with hot items ~ for those odd books we aren't so sure about, it could cost us more $$$ in the long run.
