In 1999, I had a cold or sinus infection and was on antibiotics. The infection was still in full swing after 10 days, so the Doctor Doubled my prescription to 1000 milligrams of amoxicillin. This cleared up the cold or sinus infection and also caused more problems: I ended up with the diarrhea for 3 weeks, severe cramps, diarrhea, and even to the point I thought I had to go and all it was a few flakes. Each week it got worse. When the third week rolled around, I was at work, and I couldn't even stand up straight anymore and the following day I was home on a Saturday and got the shakes and chills so bad that I ended up in the emergency room. They wanted a urine sample. I said what about a stool sample. They said, "No." Well, I insisted. They ran some emergency tests, did blood work up, and then I was admitted to the hospital for five days.

My doctor came to see me the next day. He had me scheduled for a Colonoscopy. So we had to go through the routine of getting me cleaned out. I was so irate by the time we were almost done. This time they gave me something to drink and then Cod liver oil. That was gross. Every time I went to the bathroom I could smell that sweet sickening smell of Cod liver Oil. Never again. I even told them to forget about the test. That I was not going to have it done. I felt sorry for the nurses but, I was in more pain, and you know how your butt burns when you keep on going and going, well it felt like it was on fire, so they gave me some save that cooled the area but, you have to touch the area in order to apply it. Then they made sure that disinfected my hands really good.. Well, guess what I also couldn't smoke in the hospital, so that made me even more crabby. I felt sorry for the nurses, and did apologize the next day when I was feeling better.

Hi everyone, thank you for your comments. This happened in March of 1999. And believe me, when ever I have to take an Antibiotic. I always take yogurt. Bert & Barb Thank you for the information. With the next surgery on the 20th, it won't hurt to have some yogurt on hand. If I don't get around to everyone before the Holidays. Wishing You and Yours a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hopefully sometime next year I will be back up to full speed. Thank you to everyone who has stuck by me and still voted and comment on my articles. Hugs Mary

I'm sorry this happened to you, Mary. I heard quite a bit about C-Defficile while home in the UK recently. Sophie

My mom had this, after a long course of treatment for Crohns disease, and she almost died from it. They say it creates "spores" that hiberante, and make you more susceptible to it, if you have had it before. They took forever to get my mom diagnosed also, and she was very, very sick. All doctors should warn patients abour C-Diff if they are taking antibiotics, particulalrly a couple of rounds, or high doses. Glad you're better!

hey mary That sounded pretty rough to go thru.. I, fortunately know about the flora & fauna needed in ones intestines & everytime anyone in my home takes an anti-biotic I make sure that they then eat lots of active culture yogart to restore the good flora & fauna bac again.. One can even get active culture pills to take from the natural food stores if u think u have been on really high dose.. Maybe even start to take it while taking the meds. would not hurt .. John was on high anti biotic just last week & I asked druggist if he could take his yogart drink each morning as usual & she said yes he could it would be fine to do.. Also remember to take any ibuphrophen or asprin with food to protect your stomach when takeing it..

Hi Carol and Susan, Well it is just part of life, I really didn't know what to do about it. But, I did know if it had something to do with the intestines then they should take a sample. Thank God for thinking that day. Hugs Mary

Thank goodness you were proactive and had some sense of what needed to be done.

Yes this is definitely a subject I didn't even know about, but the pain was unreal. I had no idea what was going on. But, I know better now. I eat yogurt or at least food with the pills. Hey Elly I know Momma won't eat yogurt. Those darn Bohemians and Hungarians LOL. I am part of them too plus others. Hugs Sis, Mary

My Mother almost died from this about 7 years ago. She's from a small town and the doctors there didn't know what was wrong. She came to live with us and MY doctor looked at her records and found the problem right away! She was in the hospital for a long while and it was a long road back to us! She will be 92 in April, but had we not brought her to Missiouri, she would have died. Had she been younger, they probably would have taken her colon. She has not had anymore "flares" and is doing just fine....now if she could only hear!
