I, like millions of Americans am "addicted" to video games. Now, is this really a bad thing? First, what is an addiction? Addiction: Compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming
substance (dictionary.com). In this case the habit forming substance would be video games. Now video games have no lasting health effects, and the only bad things about them is that
1. They are a waste of time.
2. You are barely moving at all.
3. The games can at some times deprive you of sleep.
4. They are expensive.
If you think about it, video games aren't that bad, the items I just listed can be consequences for many other hobbies, even though I play 40 hours of games a week, it would have nearly the same effect if I watched television, or started writing, or started reading books. I have experienced this "addiction" first hand, and I know that people interpret this the wrong way. Every month or so you hear people blaming their crimes on video games, or something of that nature. What people don't realize is that they were just using it as an excuse.
I can quit anytime I want. Why don't I? Because I enjoy video games. If I didn't play there is not much I would do. This brings me back to my point. Video game addictions are NOT bad. The media calls this an addiction, but what it really is, is a hobby. Everyday millions of people play video games, and of those millions, you have only really heard of 2 or 3 people having had a lasting effect. Like most game addicted Americans, I lead a perfectly normal life, with perfectly normal friends, and a perfectly normal job. Really, you can call any hobby you have an addiction, so what will you think next time you hear the term "Video Game Addiction"?
