Dog lovers enjoy their dogs and often include them in family time around the Christmas tree. Some dog lovers go out of their way to find the perfect gift for their pooch, while others have no idea how to go about finding that special canine gift. Here are some Christmas gift giving ideas for dogs or for the people who love them.

Gifts for Dogs

A bone makes a great gift for a dog. You will find bones sold as singles or multiples made of rawhide, beefhide, pighide, and even chicken skin. Pet owners usually consider the animal hide bones healthier, but dogs will entertain just about anything called a bone. Make sure to match the size of the dog to the size of the bone.

Having a place for the dog to sleep comfortably is important to dog owners. Some owners allow pets to sleep on the sofa or the bed, but many do not. Pets need a place to curl up that is their own spot and that does not leave pet hair or odor on good furniture. A dog's bed of stuffed batting, fake lamb's wool, or even cedar chips, makes a great gift idea for puppy or dog.

What about a month's supply of dog food? You can buy canned or dry food, doggie biscuits, or jerky treats. If the owner has more than one dog, the cost to him or her for monthly pet care can sometimes pinch. This sort of gift may seem odd at first thought, but it is a gift that will be appreciated by both the receiver and the pet.

Dog toys come in a variety of sizes and styles for both indoor and outdoor play. A large dog will need a larger toy and a small dog, a smaller one. Terriers like to shake their toys and will need one that holds together well. Finding one that squeaks makes the toy more fun for some dogs. But for the dog with attitude, you might need to find a toy that's solid enough to survive even the sharpest teeth.

Gifts for Dog Lovers

For the pet lover, consider a Christmas tree ornament with the pet's name and photo, one appropriate for hanging on the tree. Every year when the ornaments are hung, you will be remembered for the giving of that special ornament.
